It might not mean much for a first scrimmage and it dosen't say whether they were facing the 1st team defense or not but Matt Flynn threw for 2 TDs, JaMarcus Russell 1 and Randall's drive bogged down and they were forced to settle for a Ryan Gaudet field goal. No mention was made of Justin Vincent.
Tells you very very little. Doesn't say how many passes were dropped on any of the drives, how many missed blocking assignments and so on. If you start to see a trend in the over all of the scrimmages that might tell you a little but remember it is just the spring. Fall ball will tell us a lot more. :geaux: :lsug: :champs:
My man Ronnie Prude led all tacklers, but that stat in the 1st scrimmage of spring means about as much as Jason White's Heisman did in the Sugar Bowl... I'd also like to point out-as the foil to Bengal B on this one-that the offense performed VERY well in the early going according to the head man...and Marcus Randall was the man at the controls at the point in which the offense performed at its peak. Shawn Jordan is also a 2nd string fullback, and any touchdown he scored can be considered an aberration when you take into account exactly how LITTLE the fullback truly factors into our offense for the most part. Just had to give you the "Randall-riffic" side of things...
I was in no way denigrating Randall's performance. I simply reported what I read on the lsusports.net site. If you re read my post you will see that I issued a disclaimer as to the meaning of the signifigance of individual performances in a first scrimmage and I said I didn't know which QB was operating the offence against which defense. I always view results of team scrimmages with mixed feelings. If the offense does great I start thinking the defense must have sucked and vice versa. Saban said he was pleased with the offense and not pleased with the preformance of the defense. The players on the field for spring practice is not a total true representation of the team that will report for fall practice. Most of the recruits are still at their high schools and most of us are expecting that at least a few of them will contribute immediately, especially Early Doucet and Xavier Carter and maybe Big Herman. Add to that the fact that guys like Amp Hill are wearing the no contact red jerseys and hopefully will be fully recovered by fall. TE, I am not a Randall basher although I don't believe he will be the QB for the entire season. LSU opens with Oregon State followed by the Arkansas State replacement game for Houston so there are only 2 games with only one of them against a true cupcake for a new QB to gain experience before jumping into a brutal SEC road schedule. I don't want to see JaMarcus or Flynn thrown to the dogs against that kind of opposition unless one of them turns out to have the rare ability to fulfill the role with no experience the way Tommy Hodson did as a freshman.
you dont have to defend yourself for being the messenger. I think Randall is the guy to beat out...based on experience alone. he is light years ahead of the rest since you cant simulate SEC experience, now can you? with that being said... Randall is like a wily veteran with not a big upside though his downside is far less than those green boys behind him. Once the other 2 get their reps and IF one can get acclimated to this level of play then they are budding stars waiting to happen with Jamarcus being the one with the highest upside. Either way, cannnot wait to see who prevails of the 3. If marcus holds these young studs off, I am all for it and more anxious than I was before.
