At the very least, he should be banned from the sidelines on a long-term basis, and definitely suspended for the remainder of the season. From what I've heard, this guy has no history of being a trouble maker, so I don't think I could get behind a firing. I do think that the constant garbage we hear coming out of Jets camp points to a culture of very poor sportsmanship being fostered there, and this is one more example, probably the worst yet.
What if the guy he tripped was seriously injured? The reason I am really black and white on this one is because I had this happen to me before. And it was a recreational football game we were playing, but it still infuriated me so much that I got into a fight with the dude that tripped me. Another thing, is this is obviously a kid who had to scratch and claw his way onto a roster, so if he was injured, his whole livelihood could have been ruined by this douchebag.
If he had been seriously injured, then I'm sure I'd be leaning towards a more serious punishment. I'm reacting to what happened, not what could have happened. If something similar had not happened to you, do you think you'd feel so strongly about it? Not asking that question in animosity, just moving the conversation (that no one seems to care about but us, lol) along.

Actually, I'd suspend him completely for the rest of the season, he is done. For next year, let him back, but he's banned from the sidelines in games. He can watch from the press box, and help with injured players if they're brought to the locker room. I take the incident very seriously, but not to the point of killing the guy's career. I suspect if he gets fired, the rest of the league might take a hands-off approach.
I do think he should be fired. They will probably suspend him without pay for the remainder of the season. I would make him take a trippers anonymous class, however.
Suspension for the rest of this season should be first. If he is still employed in the NFL after that he should only be allowed in the locker room.
