It's anything but simple. For one, North Korea makes childish threats all of the time and are not to be believed. Overreaction to belligerence by third-world dictators is a lesson we should have learned in Iraq. Most of this propaganda is aimed internally to prop up a disrespected government by an impoverished people.

Moreover, declaring that any war with South Korea would go nuclear is nothing new. Use of tactical nuclear weapons to stop a North Korean invasion has been overtly part of the US defense plan since 1953. In the 1960's we nuclear land mines planted in the ground permanently. We had short-range battlefield nuclear missiles on the ground until the 90's. Now all of our tactical nuclear weapons are air-delivered.

North Korea does not yet have nuclear weapons deployed and with delivery system, they have only made a couple of underground tests, one of which fizzled. This rhetoric is all about pumping up their image as a "nuclear power", but the propaganda is way ahead of the reality. They will lose a nuclear war with the US very badly and they know it.

Like Iran, North Korea is a revolution waiting to happen. It is a financial disaster and cannot survive much longer. The population is unhappy and oppressed. Only aid from China is keeping them fed right now and China grows weary of the problem.

This is not a simple boxing match. This is complex, like a chess game. Right now it behooves us to bide our time and let North Korea grow weaker, let South Korea grow stronger and more confident, let China grow more cautious, and let the US have more time to wrap up two guerilla wars in west Asia and refit our ground forces for a heavy war.

This is the key to North Korea's survival, and when that dries up so will the dictatorship.

Then we need to start pressuring China into acting. I understand that PKR is probably just trying to flex nuts, but still, there are some things you don't do, and threatening nuclear war is one of them. They need to be squashed like some cockroaches.

Given that the lack of things that NK wants but doesn't have and SK has, it doesn't make much sense for them to nuke SK and make the land un-useable for a very long time. It would be like that dog that saw his reflection in the water.

Pressure them how? China backs North Korea for one reason. Because we back Taiwan. They want to trade. We don't. North Korea isn't worth losing Taiwan over.

    They got nuthin' we need.

The point is L_S_A is that no one views n. korea to be any sort of a real threat. If they did they would have been handled by now. They can rattle their little saber all they want but they don't really scare anyone. Not yet.

North Korea does not dare use a nuclear weapon. If it does it will be all over for it and it knows that.
