BATON ROUGE -- LSU football coach Nick Saban will serve as the head coach of the East squad in the 79th annual East-West Shrine Game, the all-star game recently announced.
Saban will coach opposite of Oklahoma's Bob Stoops, who will serve as head coach for the West team. The contest is slated for Saturday, Jan. 10, 2004 at Pacific Bell Park in San Francisco.

The all-star game annually selects some of the nation's top seniors for a week-long schedule of practices and activities within the community. Last year, LSU wide receiver Jerel Myers participated in the contest, catching six passes for 148 yards.

Saban joins Charlie McClendon as the only two LSU coaches to serve as a head coach in the East-West Shrine Game. McClendon held the head coaching post three times at the all-star game in 1971, 1976, and 1980.

Saban coached as an assistant at the East-West Shrine Game in 2000. Other LSU coaches that have held assistant coach positions at the all-star game include Mike Archer in 1990 and Bernie Moore in 1947.
