Just curious as to why it has taken so long for the kidnapping of over 200 Christian female children in order for the US and the World to "get serious" about these terrorists and their crazy evil leader. Hoping for the Nigerian government to handle things was silly. They have no ability to regain control nor to effectively eliminate this group.

And how is it that despite having killed over 900 people by 2010, SoS Hillary Clinton refused repeated requests to designate them as a terrorist organization? Had we been targeting them for the last several years, we could have had so much more information on their movement in the region and how they operate.

Somebody needs to step up and take action. Words are useless at this point.

What this group is doing is sickening. They are kidnapping women and young females because they are against females being educated.

I would be fine with sending special forces over there, find the girls, and killing all of the members of this group....starting with their leader. This kind of shit is reprehensible and sickening.

They're not white, so most Americans don't care.

So is there a death toll that activates the moniker of "terrorist group" that I'm not aware of? Also, who cares what they're called? Just another group of religious nutbags.

Or is it that they are Christian in a Muslim country?

They also bombed the UN building in Abuja, the capital of Nigeria, along with several incidents of terrorism. In March 2012, it was reported that Boko Haram had taken a strategy to simulate convoys of high-profile Nigerians to access target buildings that are secured with fortifications. Boko Haram has also reportedly attacked Christian worship centers to "trigger reprisal in all parts of the country", distracting authorities so they can unleash attacks elsewhere.

The group is also known for using motorcycles as their vehicle of choice to assassinate government officials and security officers.
"Counterterrorism officials in the State Department, Justice Department and FBI all favored officially designating the group as an "official terrorist organization" based on intelligence that some of its members were tied to al Qaeda. The Bureau of African Affairs - and, notably, Nigerian leaders - did not."

Why does it matter if they are official? The US doesn't always just bust in and do what they want. "Though the CIA can gather intelligence on terror groups regardless of their status on a State Department list, official designation unlocks more robust means to combat them, since it triggers the Authorization for Use of Military Force. Waiting for the Nigerian government has resulted in where we are today. The money to Boko Haram should have been identified and cut off years ago.

Nope. If they were white Muslims, it would be all over the news because it would be such an oddity. It's because they're black.

All of that typing and in the end, it still doesn't matter one bit what label you apply to them.

Hard to call it a Muslim country when 50% is Muslim, 40% Christian and 10% tribal. Other estimates say 48% Christian and 47% Muslim. It is very much a divided country, which is the problem. This is the latest chapter in a conflict that has been going on for some time.

I think we will provide investigative, intelligence and other legal and law enforcement support, but this is beginning to look like another civil war situation and we have had lots of bad experience getting involved in civil wars. We spend billions, Americans get killed, and both sides end up hating us. Syria is very much a civil war and Ukraine is looking like its going to be one. Africa has a half-dozen civil wars going on. We must guard against getting sucked into them.

These kidnappings are so bad for islamic PR that not even Al Qaeda supports it. Nigeria is traditionally British and French turf so we traditionally defer to them and the Brits are getting involved. But if any western military forces show up, the girls will likely be murdered. They have already been split up to complicate rescue attempts. All of the options are bad.

More like half a million. Tribal warfare has been going on in Africa since the dawn of time and shows no sign of slowing. Overpopulation has always led to famine and slaughter as mother nature corrects an imbalance. What makes it our responsibility again? Do you imagine that we can stop this process? How would we do it? War against all the fighting tribes of Africa? I just don't see it.

We tried to feed the starving children in Somalia and the Somalis shit over us and dragged American bodies throughout the streets. So we left them to stew in their own mess of their own making. South Sudan, Rwanda, Nigeria, Liberia, kenya, Burundi, Mali, Niger, Central African Republic, Congo, and Zimbabwe all have domestic tribal and religious wars going on. We are not the worlds policeman.

Clearly the environmental issues you mention have not proven curable by most standards. However, I do believe there are options when it comes to mass rape and kidnapping, child slavery issues. Can you imagine if 200+ girls in America were kidnapped?

At the very least, we should have taken the BH leader out long ago.
