Gov Moonbeam signed a new law that would "prohibit high school and middle school football teams from holding full-contact practices during the off-season and bar them from conducting more than two full-contact practices per week during the season.......also would prohibit teams from holding full-contact practices that exceed 90 minutes on a single day and would require an athlete who has sustained a head injury or concussion to complete a supervised return-to-play protocol of at least seven days."

"The measure is opposed by the California Medical Assn., which said in a statement to lawmakers that the bill’s intent was “laudable,” but that it could allow “some licensed healthcare providers without the proper training in concussions and neurology to perform these assessments.”

In other outstanding legislative news, Cali lawmakers yesterday, "approved a measure that would designate the California red-legged frog (Rana draytonii) as the official state amphibian"

Gawd, just shoot me. Would it be bad form to eat the official state amphibian? Do we need an official amphibian?

You seem to be opposed to the limitations on practice? I am all for measures to reduce concussions with youth players. I'd like to know how this new law stacks up against similar measures implemented in other states before having an opinion. I know the NFL has taken great strides to lead the sport into taking measures at every level...except the NCAA. Not sure why the NCAA is trailing, but they are the greatest offenders.

I could eat a bucket of frog legs however, being on the not so big scale, these might take a bucket and a half.

Does California have an official State Dog? The Catahoula Leopard Dog is the State Dog of Louisiana

And yes, we do have a State Amphibian. The Green Tree Frog. And of course the Crawfish is the State Crustacean. Only two other states have an official State Crustacean. Maryland has the Blue Crab and Oregon has the Dungeness Crab.

No. Only 11 states have an official dog. I'd be happy to go with pit bulls but I think Chihuahuas win out. They make great taco meat.

My daughter wanted a Catahoula LD. I did some research but ended up with a mixed breed dog instead.

What other states have similar laws? I would be curious to know. I am opposed to legislators making knee jerk laws when they don't have all the data necessary, nor all the appropriate steps in place. The reality is, parents can choose to have their child participate or not. It shouldn't be the state's place but of course that should come with corresponding tort reform so those same parents don't sue when Johnny gets a concussion.

There are inner city kids who will have no other opportunity to get to college other than through athletic scholarships. If kids in CA become less competitive and get recruited less because of this, it hardly seems like a good trade-off.

33% of all concussions occur during practice. 1 in 5 HS football players will sustain a concussion. (2013 stats)
