I read a brief story tonight that reminded me of our 2003 LSU Tiger football team. I hope that my point is not taken as arrogance, for it is not meant to be so. After Napoleon had annihilated the combined armies of Austria and Russia at Austerlitz on 2 December 1805, he noticed a Russian artillery Major that was taken prisoner. The Russian officer cried and screamed in excellent French that he wanted to be shot and not taken prisoner. Napoleon ordered the Russian officer to be brought before him. With tears streaming down his face, the Russian cried: "Sire, order your men to shoot me, for I do not deserve to live! I have lost all of my guns!" Napoleon answered: "Calm yourself, young man. It is no disgrace to be defeated by such an army as mine." The point was well taken. The French Army of 1805 was so fine an instrument of war that it indeed was no disgrace to suffer defeat at its hands. The 2003 LSU Tiger football team was so outstanding that it was no disgrace at all for our opponents to suffer defeat at our hands. Southlink 02! We will meet your fine team between the hedges this fall! May the best team win! The day will be crowned with Glory.
