He always was one bad dude! Sounds like he has his sh!t together too. He has a long list of impressive accomplishments and just keeps adding to it, good for him.
A friend of mine signed him out of Rosenburg, Tx to LSU. Alan played all those years after epilepsy was diagnosed when he was 15 years old. To this day, he is the only OL to be awarded the Offensive Player of the Year by the Touchdown Club of Houston.
Pretty amazing really. I had to look this up to verify indeed that Faneca had lost that much, that he ran the marathon, etc. Here is an interesting article I found on NFL lineman overall, and their post-NFL years. Much more focus on getting their weight down, and getting physically fit. Great to see this happening. I tell young patients regularly about the importance of maintaining a healthy weight for your height, known as BMI, over time. I often reference OL and DLs, such as Reggie White, as examples of how the heart, pancreas, and/or liver can't sustain meeting all of the demands of all of that weight over time and just basically poop out, which is a simplistic way to think about it, but essentially true. http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/10042606/losing-weight-winning-former-nfl-offensive-linemen
