Any of you ever trapped hogs? They have been tearing up my property. Very bad. I built a couple of traps and set them out 2 nights ago. Thought I would have gotten at least a few by now as I don't even think they ever leave my place. I put the corn and the pig liquor all up in the traps, got nothing. Do they have to get use to the trap being there or what?

We trap em year round. A lot will depend on the size of the trap, how long its been there etc. I will tell you what we do and maybe it will help out. Get you some hog wire or really any heavy wire fence and make a sliding trap door or a swinging door(couple pieces of channel and a square piece of steel is all you need with a pulley for the rope to run through for a sliding door or any old walk through type gate and a heavy bungy cord will make a swinging door.) Find a place where the hogs are already going to some and find 4 trees that make somewhat of a square(you can also sink some posts if you cant find trees that will work.) start feeding them there between the trees or posts. After a couple days put up a strip of fence between 2 of the trees making 1 side of the trap. Couple more days put another side of the fence up....then another, and lastly the piece that you built the trap door on. Now you have your trap totally built....make sure the bottom of the fencing is secure so they cant root out.....but do not set it right away. Keep the door propped open for a few days feeding them hard. Point being you want to catch a bunch at one time and not be one at a timing em bc you probably only get 1 maybe 2 shots at catching them in any one spot. Once they are very comfortable with the trap and several are going in it at the same time then it is time to set it. To set it just run a rope through the pulley from the door to a long stake and hammer the stake in the ground holding the door open. Set it in there pretty good so that its not to easy to trip...you dont want to first hog in it to trip it at the first bump so set it plenty deep enough that several get a chance to get in there and as they root around they will knock it loose and the door will shut.

I put this one out Friday and it caught a 250lb hog today. This one I made with a door that slams shut from the top. I hope I didn't ruin my chances for multiples.

I put this one out Saturday in a spot they been rooting but aint got nothing yet. Both traps I made out of 1.25" 14ga square tube. The doors are 1.5" round 16ga.

maybe in that spot......but just move it around a little bit and they will go in it. little on the small side to catch a lot of them but you might get 3 or 4 in there. Main thing to get multiples at one time is like i said there first and obviously has to be several going in it altogether which just takes time for them to get that comfortable with it especially one like that that is not utilizing their natural surroundings but given some time and they will go in it without hesitating....and then the trap has to stay set long enough for them to get in there. If that first hog is tripping it right away the other might be standing there about to walk in and have the door slam shut on em. Also with those portable traps like that with an open bottom it may not seem like it but if you give them to much time in the trap they will root out from under it just about like a dog digging under a fence so keep a check on em and dont think you can just leave them in the trap a few days or they will be gone. Not sure on the laws where you are trapping or if you are worried about them where you are trapping but in MS all hog traps have to be 50%+ open on top so turkeys or other non-target critters can get out.

It looks to me that his trap could be flipped over and modified slightly to address both of these concerns.

Certainly could be. Hogs are some smart critters but I aint seen one that could climb to high yet.

I have both of them anchored pretty heavily. It gets checked every morning and evening. I will take the bolt cutters to 50% of the top.
I read that some of the older hogs don't like the feel of the wire on the ground and shy away from it?
Pretty easy to add a ground to it if we lose them this way.
Do you know a decent game camera I could set up?

Hans, boubie, I'm your white knight.

I saved this from another site cause it was so dam informative. Long but good info. He makes MANY posts throughout the thead as he addresses different things such as types of traps, bait, etc.

Don't remember how to post a link with the title in it but it's titled:
Instrucional hog trapping and eradication thread

Possibly but throw a layer of sand or pine straw over the bottom wire should help with that though I've never noticed that being a problem. We trap close to a hundred of them every year but like I said we use the coral type traps with no bottom in them mostly and steak it down every 6 inches or so. Takes some time to set up but when you are doing it to catch a dozen+ at a time its worth the extra effort for the much bigger payoff. We do use some of the more box type like you made but only in certain circumstances.
