I have heard many arguments for bowl games vs a playoff system since the inception of the BCS. Some will argue that the sanctity of the regular season will only remain intact if the bowl system stays as is. They say that all the extra games they will play is bad for academics and the like. Where will they fit these games into the schedule? Then there are those that say a playoff will take away from the bowls, and ruin the tradition. But this is a playoff that involves the bowls. Well I have all your answers for you. I have devised the best playoff system in the history of the world. There is no poking holes in my plan, because it is absolutly flawless ;) I also believe this is a very workable idea, and can be done. It is not one of those wild off the wall ideas that doesn't consider the higher ups in the NCAA, TV, or the bowls (I would have said the buerocracy of college football, but as you may have noticed, I can't spell)

I'm going to pretend I'm on Who Wants To Be A Millionare for a moment and bore you with my thought process.

At first I thought of a wild, 32 team, 8 game, intricate double elimination round robin tournament, then I got off my dentist's operating chair, cleared my head, and thought of this

I thought to just play the 4 BCS games, and the winners play, but then I relized that there would be three games after the BCS "quarterfinal" round, and the rulers of college football would not stand to have their bowl games play second fiddle to later rounds. So to fix that problem, I have devised this great system.

It is an 8 team, 3 round Tournament.
The first round includes 3 upper level bowls, but non BCS, and one BCS bowl.

    4 teams move on.
Second round is 2 BCS games

Final round is one BCS game.

    An example for this year
    Rnd 1.
Orange Bowl - #1(seed) Miami vs #8 BYU
Citrus Bowl - #2(as of now:)) Tennessee vs #7 Illinois
Cotton Bowl - #3 Nebraska vs #6 Maryland
Holiday Bowl - #4 Oregon vs #5 Colorado

    Rnd 2.
Sugar Bowl - #1 Miami vs #5 Colorado
Fiesta Bowl - #2 Tennessee vs #3 Nebraska

Rnd 3 - National Title Game
Rose Bowl - #1 Miami vs #2 Tennessee
    Winner- Miami

I told you it was a genius plan

    This solves all the problems.

Right now the main problems are, there are several teams that think they deserve to be in the national title game, and only one bowl game is of any importance to the national title picture. Althought to CFB fans the other bowls still garner intrest, the only game of any real concequence is the Rose bowl this year, This eliminates that, making all the bowl games important.

You schedule this tournament for 2 games January 1st, 2 games January 2nd, 2 games the next saturday, and 1 game the saturday after that. This system only extends the season by two games for the participants in the final game, 1 game for the semifinal particapents, and no games for the first round losers, because they would have been playing in one bowl game anyway.

You rotate the BCS game that is played in the first round every year.

The money is based on how far you advance, 5-8 million for a first round loss 12-15 million for a second round loss, and 20-25 million for a final game apearance. The money balances out evenly between the bowls as to what they would pay out now.

You still keep your independence bowl and peach bowl and outback bowl and the like, they have no more and no less importance than they did prior to having this plan inacted, they are what they are, a fun fun time that helps out the program.

There are things that I left out because this is such a long message, and i devised it all in my head as I was writing, so I forgot some things I wanted in here, so I challange anyone who thinks they can find a problem with this idea to post a reply, and I will respond.

Good idea. The only problem I see is that 6 teams get knocked out of the whole bowl picture. The schools/conferences that get cut out will complain.

That being said there is no perfect system. No matter what the plan is someone will get screwed and be unhappy. But this plan is as good as any other out there.:)

well, there are too many bowls today, a lot of inferior teams make postseason appearances. Losing six lower teir teams isn't a real big deal, but if it becomes an issue, they could always create a new bowl or two.

Why can't they start earlier than Jan 1st? Would all of the non-playoff bowls get upset that nobody is paying attention to their games? Does everyone think BYU would still get in an eight team playoff if they had one this year? I think they would deserve a chance ONLY if they were undefeated like this year but it seems like they may still get squeezed. Saban is interviewed by the AM sports talk show every Thursday morning in Houston and he was asked his thoughts this morning on all of the playoff talk. He suggested that the bowls go back to how they were with the SEC champ going to the Sugar and Big 12 going to the Orange, etc. Then he recommended having one game AFTER all of the bowls that would matchup the top two teams left. The reasons he gave against a playoff system was he thought the sanctity of the bowls should remain intact and that people (especially media and fans) don't realize how much of a toll it takes on college athletes to add 2-3 weeks extra preparation in the midst of finals and everything else. I'm not sure what the answer is but the current BCS setup doesn't seem to be working. An eight team format similar to the one above would have barriers to overcome but could please more people than it would displease.

On another note, I think that there is too much time between the end of the season and the bowls. Usually its a whole month! They need to start the season later or have the bowls earlier (which would allow for some playoffs!).

I addressed all of the other bowls in the piece. No one pays any attention to them now as far as having any signifigance. The non playoff bowls would remain exactly as they are today- a fun time for fans and players that is good for the program.
