This mornings paper mentioned that some hunters and a certain politician are trying to re-instate a bear season in Louisiana. There are only about 500 bears in Louisiana and they have been endangered for decades. They have had a slight recovery in recent years as habitat corridors established for them seems to be working. But already someone wants to change their status and allow hunting.

No way we should be hunting bears in Louisiana. If you want to hunt bears, go to Canada where they are plentiful.

In the past I have spent a lot of time in the Atchafalaya Spillway where they had released some black bears to propagate the species. I have seen all sorts of wild animals but I have never once seen a bear out there. I heard that a lot of them were brought from Minnesota and a lot of them found their way back there. If there are only 500 bears it would be insane to allow hunting them. It would be like hunting whooping cranes.

Here in Avoyelles parish we see quite a few of them. A lot of hunters have lost feeders, cameras etc to bears. I think that may have a lot to do with the push for a hunting season. I am not interested in hunting them. Had some bear cooked for me once, I do not consider it fit to eat, therefore I won't hunt em.

There are enough bears being poached in Louisiana already, without a hunt. I know that there is a bear hide in my uncle's hunting camp and he damn sure never hunts out of Louisiana.

I agree we shouldn't hunt them. I'm shocked there are enough to even consider it.

I edited out the other part in case you accept my advise. I wouldn't post that. LDWF have a net force and could pick that up and it could cost nonk.

Hearsay from an anonymous internet character.

If they can find him, he deserves it. He's been hunting deer out of season his entire life and he's about 80.

Or Alaska. Many years ago when I was on active duty in the Air Force we were in a truck north of Fairbanks and had to stop to allow a gigantic grizzly to cross the road. I had a bowel movement shortly thereafter.

I know. Too much information. :D
