I experienced something last night that made me think this would be a good thread. I'm thinking we share gambling stories for close misses, big scores etc. My story is about sports betting.

So a bunch of my friends are big in to sports betting. I personally haven't bet on sports in ten years since I was in college betting $10 per game and realizing that I'm terrible at it going with my gut or against my gut. It just never works out for me. Anyway, so my buddy put 97 dollars down on a ten team parlay. He informed us last night as he got his sixth game right. 7, 8, and 9 were on Cal Northridge, Cal Riverside, and Pepperdine. I should mention here that the payout on this bet was over 61k. He ends up hitting on all three of these games by at least 5 points against the spread so now we're fading the UCLA-Stanford game for 61 thousand dollars. Unfortunately, the game started while the last three were around half time so hedging the bet was not an option. It's all or nothing. He had Stanford +6.5. At halftime stanford was down 12. With 4 minutes to go, they were within 9. In the end, Stanford lost by 17. From the penthouse to the outhouse. It was pretty exciting though.

Those are the toughest to take. I had either a 7 or 8 team baseball parlay working the same way once. Last game was an over the run total and I was down a 1/2 pt. Home team up bottom 9 bases loaded and no outs. Push one run across and I cash. Other team (think it was the reds) brings in a new pitcher and strikes out the side. Never bet a baseball game since.

Another one was a 6 team in cfb. I was in Iraq so wasn't able to track most of it but one of my games was Ohio St laying like 42.5 to buffalo or some other mac school. It wasn't until later I realized that all 5 of my other teams covered and Ohio St won by 42. Here is the best part, their idiot kicker missed an extra point earlier in the game.

That's the way that shit rolls sometimes.

When I saw the thread title, I thought it would be casino gambling. I don't sports bet, and rarely casino gamble either, but here's my story...

I never take more than $100 into the casino, and my preferred game is craps. On this occasion (at Cypress Bayou), the rolls were against me, and I was down to a $5 chip, but the dice were passed to me. So I dropped the 5 on the line and threw for a point, and then proceeded for about 10 minutes to throw every number but my point or a 7. I was sitting there with that lousy $5 on the table, and everyone else was pulling in chips with both hands, including a couple of high rollers. Finally those two guys actually covered a couple of numbers for me, and I started winning. I ended up walking out about $300 to the good.

I absolutely LOVE craps. Will only play with dice though. Lots of casinos have that stupid card crap shit that just isn't the same. Anyway, I went on a cruise after my first Iraq deployment and won enough on the craps table to pay for the cruise for my family. Great times.

I never got the gambling bug. Just some low-stakes poker with the guys now and then for fun, not profits. But I have a couple of friends who are addicted to that damn casino boat. I played a lot of 9-ball in college for beer money but I'm too rusty to try it now.

I don't know how true this is. I heard it from a guy bagging my groceries at the supermarket. He told me that a friend of his from Boston, a huge fan of the Patriots, was in Las Vegas before the start of the 2007 season. This guy lays $1000 on bet at astronomical odds saying that the Pats will go undefeated and win the Super Bowl. We all know that New England ran the table in the regular season and won their first two playoff games and were 18-0 going into the Superbowl. The Pats fan stood to make $12Million Dollars off his $1G bet! Before the game the sports book where he had placed the bet called him and offered to pay him $2Million if he would agree to call off the bet. The guy told them no and ended up with nothing.

What would you have done? I would have taken the $2 Mill and run

If the book stiffed him on the payout, he would stiff him on the buyout. In a state where gambling is legal . . . I'd get a lawyer.

Me too plus they were favored so he could have bet giants plus 5 or whatever it was for 6 million and had a chance to double up. Or better yet, bet the giants on the money line. Would win either way.

If I remember correctly the giants were +700 or so on the ML so it would have only taken a $200 bet to win his money back plus $400
