The Good 1. Kenny Hilliard is seriously quicker and is ready to play some football his senior year. 2. Dural and Diarse will be very good receivers if someone can get them the ball. 3. The defensive backs can play this here game. Wisconsin never completed a long pass. 4. Quinn looked very good out there. 5. The defensive ends played quite well. 6. The fake punt worked even though everyone saw it coming. Peveto is good for special teams. 7. LSU did not quit, even down three scores in the 2nd half. The Bad 1. Fournette did not show up. Two yards a carry 2. Magee did not show up. One yard a carry. 3. 9 for 21 passing is not going to cut it in the SEC West. 4. Harris got in for one series and got sacked twice. He cannot see the blitz coming. 5. Somebody needs to step up at DT. We got gashed inside. 6. The tight ends did not really get into the passing game. The Ugly 1. A delay-of-game penalty on the second-half opening kickoff! Are you kidding me? Time management issues once again. 2. The highly-touted offensive line could not open any holes until three Wisconsin Defensive linemen went down. They let their QB get sacked. Grimes has his work cut out for him. Giant disappointment. 3. Although his average was good, Keene manages to shank a punt in every game. That has to stop. 4. LSU gave up too many big plays. Way too many.
I agree with your assessment overall. However, I cannot help but believe that one of your "goods" were due to the complete lack of a passing game on the part of Wisconsin rather than us being great (DB's looking good) and another was due to the fact that two of their already brand new starting D line went out, and they had moved to a nickle D, which diminished their ability to stop the run (Hilliard looking good). I hope I am wrong, and we see consistently good play in those areas all season long.
Can't argue with any of your points. The oline was the most disappointing aspect of the game to me, reminded me of the last time the coaches thought the oline was going to be the strength of the team. Mcgee & LF never had a chance on their carries. The pass protection was shaky as well.
R Right. To add, part of the bad re: LF & TM not doing well was b/c our O-line was so crappy for 3 qtrs, which is mentioned appropriately in the Ugly.
Grimes may need to move some people around and shake up that O-line. 6-6, 320 average and they couldn't handle a much smaller D-line until they lost Herron.
A lot of what we saw yesterday with the oline reminded me of what we saw in the 2004 opener. OSU had a small, quote quick dline that gave us fits.
i didn't think the DEs looked particularly good, especially early. I'm more hopeful about the TEs. at least they were thrown three times. fournette and magee did nothing, but it looked like it was all because of the OL. Hilliard did look quicker but there were some huge holes that the other backs never had. I would have loved to see fournette run through some of those (or get a decent screen pass thrown to him). that being said, he showed no elusiveness on returns---i think quinn might be better suited.
Wisconsin may not have a passing game but coverage was tight all night. LSU will be just fine at DB it's the front seven that look soft.
One more to add in the ugly column, the screen passes. That has to be the most poorly thrown screens I have ever seen. Jennings wasn't much better on the wide pitches/option. Tons of work to do on the practice field this week.
