then LSU is not held in as high esteem nationally as I thought going into this search. If LSU's only choices are Petrino, Nutt, and Miles, then Bertman should just promote Jimbo Fisher. I hate to say it but Fisher looks like the best candidate at this point. I was really hoping for a defensive minded coach because that is what wins at a higher level than these offensive guys. When you get involved in shootouts all the time you will lose around 40-50% of the time.
OK, then who do you want? Who would demonstrate the excellence of LSU's national esteem? We are talking to the best candidates, I don't understand why people are upset by this. We have talked to Petrino, Myles, Del Rio, Nutt(Ok, this one does make me cringe) and Skip plans on speaking with Tedford. Who would you like Skip to interview? We have been spoiled by Saban. We got used to having one of the best coaches in Football. Anyone who replaces him is going to be a step down from what we are used to.
They just mentioned nutts name on cold pizza as being lsu's next coach then butch davis taking the arkansas job...let me just say it made me cringe....
IF Jimbo was going to be given serious consideration, Saban should have been asked not to coach the bowl game. It would have given Jimbo a chance to audition - to see how he handles the media circus, how he would run a week of practice, and what kind of game he would call without Saban's conservative influence over him. That didn't happen, so I personally don't think he is a contender unless the coaching search falls apart, which it won't.
You know I hadn't thought about that, but it is a very good point. It would have been interesting to see how Jimbo handled the Bowl Game.
Petrino has been sought out at AU, ND and Fla among others. This guy is in big demand right now, and I would put him as an elite coaching prospect. Miles and Nutt are in the *nice* category (and that is pushing it for Nutt) and I would agree with you if one of these guys are hired.
Who says that these guys are LSU's ONLY choices? Geez, man, how about a little patience, huh? The search only began three days ago. Skip says he has a long list, and it includes some big names that would surprise most of us. None of us know who those names are, but I have faith that he will do the right thing. Remember, we're in the middle of the holidays, man, it ain't gonna happen overnight. If by the middle to end of next week no viable candidate has emerged, then I would say it's time to start worrying a little. Also remember, 5 years ago, nobody was even THINKING about the name Nick Saban, and then bam!...all of a sudden he's LSU's HC. You don't always know what's going on during these things...it's all very cloak and dagger stuff. Just relax, and have some faith in Skip...everything will shake out just fine.
This is UNREAL..... This is the beginning of the coaching search not the end but it doesn't like we have the top candidates because of timing. It would've been nice to have Spurrier available but he's not. It would've been nice to have Bob Stoops available but he's not. Say what U will but I think Petrino and Del Rio could be the best candidates available at any level. I think both would do fine at LSU and maybe he could keep some of the same coaches, hint, Muschamp! What did people like U say about Nick Saban when he was hired? His record wasn't that impressive and we just beat his team pretty good in a bowl game. Anyone who comes to BR will fatten his record with the team and recruits we have coming in just like NS did. Playing in BR aint like it use to be, we're back! BTW, Didn't Petrino's team beat Fla St when they were #1 a few years back?
And I wouldn't panic about Nutt or anybody being hired in the next day or two. Until we announce someone like Bobby Williams, Doug Williams or some token minority has been formally interviewed to appease the BCA, I don't think we will be naming a coach. Just a matter of dotting all the i's and crossing the t's. I figure Skip will do it by the book.
Jack Del Rio, Romeo Crennel, Mike Nolan. I want a defensive minded coach, the top coaches are almost always defensive minded - Belichick, Stoops, Carroll, Cowher, etc . I don't know why LSU always limits its search to head coaches. Bob Stoops was never a head coach until his job at Oklahoma, I'd say that worked out pretty well . I think an NFL coordinator can run a college program with no previous head coaching experience. Even Mike Stoops would be a better choice than the guys Bertman has talked to.
