Looks like Joe Dean shares similiar sentiments as what I posted here.

Woulda been nice coming from someone a little more credible however. :hihi:

That's a good question. But just to be fair, look at LSU's success on the football field compared to those teams you mentioned in the last 15 years. If I'm not mistaken, LSU only had 3 winning seasons during the 90's. Did those other school's do that? When comparing LSU to those other teams, it's only been since Saban arrived that LSU has become competitive. Outside looking in, I wouldn't consider LSU a "top tier program". Saban did great things for LSU but not enough for LSU to automatically be considered "top tier" in the nation's eyes...just my opinion.

When comparing LSU to those other teams during that span the only thing missing at LSU was a quality coach which those other teams had. The only thing that LSU needs to be on the same level with the "top tier programs" mentioned is a quality coach and Saban proved that.

Do you think a top tier team wants an old coach? Norm Chow? He's pretty old. Saban was 52 or 53 wasn't he? That's not old for a head coach. That's really an ideal age. Spurrier is 62. How much longer do you think he's going to coach? He said MANY times while at UF he didn't want to coach long into his sixties. Bowden is 72 and hasn't done as well since he lost Richt to Georgia and Amado to N.C. State. He has had one constant and that has been Mickey Andrews. I don't think he would get the job if Bobby decided to retire.
LSU needs to look for someone young. You guys need to drop the Del Rio talk a get real. Petrino to LSU is frightening. So is Tedford. But Tedford isn't going to leave the west in my opinion. I dont think Ferentz will leave Iowa either. I hated it when UF courted Stoops because you knew he was going to say no. I say, screw em if they dont think your program is top tier.

Why would you tell us to get real in regards to Del Rio? He may be using it for leverage, but he has not denied interest. His ties here are well documented. We can pay him more than JAX, damn near double what he makes in fact. He was pissed that nobody is showing up to their games. His agent has made contact with us. You can deny it all you want, but we have a shot at this guy.

What is Del Rio making at Jax? I think if he's hired, I might be a little surprised, not because of a slight on your school but that he would be leaving a fairly successful program that is on the level that so many coaches seem to feel is the highest level in coaching. Carroll failed in the NFL as did Groh. That is why they are in college. Did I forget Spurrier?

a quick search of the net didn't give the answer, but the average nfl coaches salary is 2.5 mil. and i wouldnt be surprised if he makes only a mil.

Del Rio agreed to a five-year contract that is worth $1.2 million-$1.3 million annually.

That's pretty cheap for an NFL coach. Can you sign him to a 5 year, 22.5 million dollar deal? That's what the Dolphins are willing to pay Saban. University presidents aren't normally willing to get into bidding wars with the NFL. By saying he's interested in another job, Del Rio can negotiate for more money if the team owner doesn't want to lose him.

If we get in a bidding war with JAX, then no we cannot sign him. But can we pay him more than 1.3 mil/yr? Absolutely.
I did acknowledge that he may be doing it for leverage, which is fine. But if JAX is too cheap to renogiate then we do have a legitimate shot at him, IMO.
