Coachspeak is crap regardless of who said it. Saban only moved into the lingo after the 2001 season. Saban's candor ("We'll beat tulane beacause we're better than they are...") was great. I think he toned down his comments as he looked beyond LSU. He saw Spurrier's comments coming back in spades at the pro level.

Underestimating opponents has zero to do with coachspeak. It has to do with the atmosphere the players are in, the press they read, their classmates, and the fans. Coaches tell players not to overlook a team, but if they read and hear how great they are, it makes no difference. LSU rode the post-2003 season talk and overconfidence into two losses, Auburn and Iowa.

Miles was brutally honest about his Oklahoma State teams. He acknowledged his talent was dramatically less than Oklahoma, Texas, Nebraska, Colorado, Mizzou, and a$m. All he promised was their best effort. Now on a bigger stage, with championship caliber talent, he's being equally frank. LSU is playing for the Rose Bowl. There is a gulf between Miles saying that and someone like Chris Selfo barking that tune.

The new most over rated word. COACH SPEAK. Earlier miles was using coach speak concerning the qb's. Now what he says about winning championships is not CS as compared to what Saban said. I don't believe that he would have been hired if he would have told SB that he did not want ot compete for a NC.

Miles needs to prov it on the field. I hope we hired a coach and not a best friend.

These reactions of "Well, he needs to show it, not just talk about it." reminds me of the ridiculous reactions about Perriloux like "Well, after he gets leveled a couple of times, he'll know how tough SEC football is." Blah blah blah.

Of COURSE he has to show it on the field. But how many times does a coach show something on the field in freaking MAY!

The guy gave a nice speech. No need to start the sabre rattling, tough guy crap about it.

if you're saying that 'underestimating opponents' has to do with 'the press they read', then how could 'coachspeak' not have anything to do with it? coachspeak is strictly for the media. if players read what the coach is saying to the media, then it's fair to say that it would get inside their heads.

Players also hear what the coach says in closed meetings and practices. There is a difference between respecting your opponent and bulletin board material, too. Many folks dislike Spurrier because of his frankness, but his butt covered the check his mouth wrote.

Miles is setting the expectation level. If he pulls an 8-3, he should catch hell (gezze, just 10 years ago 8-3 would have manna from Heaven). I hear it alot, that LSU is going to slip from the pantheon of college football. Folks need to kiss that attitude good-bye and start expecting championship runs on a regular basis. I believe Miles is taking the first steps to make championship thinking a fabric of the LSU culture.

Thefirst steps. I believe if he jsut keeps in the path Sstarted he will do just fine.

The first steps have been done with year after year top recruiting. Post season bowl victories, SEC championships, NationalChampionship. Cleaned up program, academic center and all the rest. But first steps made by les miles, sorry but he doesn't get that award.

    Agreed.

Unfortunately, unless Miles is given credit for getting off on the right foot (by saying the things he is right now), come November the talk will be "Saban's talent" and zero credit for LSU hiring, what I believe, was the absolute best coach out there to BUILD on Saban's legacy and KEEP LSU there. Les Miles is talking the talk of champ, he needs to walk it now. If he does that, he should be given all the kudos possible, not comments like "Saban's talent".

He will probably get the Saban talent thing for two years if he wins. The same things as you know happens when a new coach comes in at the bottom, "Well we'll see what he can do with his kids" just the nature of the beast. LM has a lot to work with.

If he doesn't win and we get creamed BP will be looked at as a flop coach. And people will be calling for LM head IMO.

No doubt the offense will open up this year and I feel based on the recruits that is the direction Saban was going so no news there.

Still over 100 days left.
