JV's freshman year alone prevents him from ever being a flop. It's easy to say he looked so good that year because the line was better, but the fact remains no other back ran as well behind that line. I also don't think he has been that bad the last 2 years. LSU has just been very fortunate to have so much depth at RB, a talent like JV has been moved to 2nd or 3rd string. He is also our best special teams player, something he doesn't get enough credit for.
calco we don't use a angle block scheme on the oline and 99% of schools dont either cause it sucks. It forces you into one hole. 95% of the nfl teams don't either. LSU and the rest use a zone blocking scheme. and it was very effective before les came and screwed it up with his iform sh*t. Hopefully he lets jimbo run the offense this year. Ace formation(single back) three wide to me is our best formation by far.
I agree. It allows you to avoid telegraphing your running direction with the fullback and with a two tight formation, get 7 blockers on the line. The 3 wr set works particularly well with a talented slot receiver (Skyler, Early, Trindon??)
Here goes our rep points......JV had great stats in a few games.. Nothing that would have been set in the memories of LSU fans forever. But that run in the SB that would eventually become LSU "lore" endeared him forever. Although, we as rival fans, would much rather you give the ball to him than Bru or Addai, he is due respect and not in some small quantity. Bill Cannon run #2------? Cannon wasn't even "that" good in the pros." Right time/ right place. But give JV his due, he has not walked off, saying you people will miss me, or anything like that........He has taken the attitude of "where ever I can help best." THAT coming from a walk-on is just the usual bs. THAT coming from the MVP of the National Championship Game, is truely rare. Be P--R--O--U--D of him.
I disagree with you on this. If you can run it with good gaurds it is very effective. Sometimes you can get too many people trying to block at the point of attack and it just clogs the hole. That is base zone blocking for you . Add a fullback in the area and you have one of our problems with running last year.
last year we used way more angle blocking then we ever did before and our running game was the worst in years. angle blocking forces you into a hole and if it clogged then your screwed. Zone blocking allows you to create multiple holes and cutback lanes. On certain plays angle blocking is great, like counters, traps, plays where you are catching the players playing bad techinique or out of postition like a zone cutback play. Also great on tosses but there is a reason 99% of teams in college and pro run zone schemes.
