In his chat Ivan Maisel was asked if he though Miss St. had a good chance of luring a big name coach since Jackie is retiring?

Ivan Maisel: The best names I've heard are Sly Croom of the Packers and Doug Williams of Grambling. I would think a guy like Jimbo Fisher at LSU will get a look soon, too. Whoever takes it will have to expect to get the NCAA hammer pretty soon.

Miss State needs a rebuilder. A Bill Parcells of college football if you will.

I think that Charlie Strong, Mike Stoops, and of course the eternal head coaching candidate...Dennis Franchione...

Croom, Williams, and Fisher would all be good hires as well...

Isn't it refreshing that Out of the 6 candidate that just popped into my head, Strong, Croom and Williams-half the list-are all African Americans? Times they are a changing...For the better, if you ask me...

I'm all for diversity in the Sec. It's 2003 and still no Africian American coaches in the SEC. Back to what I was going to say thought, is Moo State the best place to hire the first African American coach in the SEC.

They may be set up for failure at Miss. State. That program has never done very much, and only Jackie Sherill has taken them to consistent success, before this current downturn.

I'd bet they take Charlie Strong. And he is such a good DC, and has been for so long, he deserves his shot at a head job. Good luck to him at Miss. State, he's gonna need it.

No to Doug Williams. The guy's a flat out jerk, and GSU has not performed well outside the dominion of black colleges. Croom is a dyed-in-the-wool Alabama man, so I don't see him taking the MSU job. Also, while I do see Jimbo Fischer being a head coach one day, I don't see him going to Miss. State. More than likely, Fischer would like to be the one to succeed Coach Saban when he finally moves to the NFL (hopefully 6+ years off).

I read on ESPN and other sites that some people are speculating that Miss. State will hire a black coach, in part, because the NCAA promised that it will go easy on them when it's time to discuss sanctions if they do so. I don't know what the nature of the NCAA investigation is at Miss. State, but it must be pretty serious for talk like this to come up. The NCAA wants more black coaches, but if serious improper benefits were handed out to players, I don't see the NCAA holding back at all, for any reason. And they had better not. You do the crime, you do the time. Regardless.

The way the Jets are playing this year Herman Edwards might be looking for a job.

    Tuberville and Jimbo Fisher

Just a curious question. LSU fans dislike Tuberville but seem to like Fisher. Yet Fisher was on Tuberville's staff at Ole Miss and Auburn. Now Emsfinger (sp?), former LSU QB is on the Auburn staff. Why all the animousity about the coaches?

Its just Tubbs. I dont think any of us dislike Ensminger.

I was thinking the same thing. I dont think I would want the job if I were Strong or Fisher. They may be better served waiting for a more fertile opportunity.
