Wasn't the official name the "Paul Tulane University of Louisiana"? Then just shortened to Tulane University.

Seems to me that uLaLa is ia bit late on the Univ of Louisiana claim.

Commentary: The Tiger Roars
A tongue-in-cheek column riles LSU fans

The caller, a woman, asked if I liked my job.

“Yes, ma’am,” I said, “I do.”

“Do you expect to keep it?” she asked, an incredulous tone to her voice.

“I sure hope so.”

“Well I don’t think you’ll be working there next week,” she said, and then went on to question my intelligence, my upbringing and my sanity.

She was outraged. Shocked. Angry. How could we put “5 Reasons to Hate LSU” on the cover of last week’s Times? How could we dare!?

“You have to be the dumbest man on the planet,” she said, which was plainly silly because she hasn’t met every man on the planet.
She was among the first of the callers. Of the many, many, many, many, many callers, all of whom had pretty much the same message.

“You’re stupid.”

“You’re an ass.”

“You’re a stupid ass.”

The e-mails, well, the e-mails were worse. Almost all of them said they’d no longer read The Times. About half of them said they’d drop their subscriptions, which would be a neat trick since The Times is a free publication. (But hey, if you want to pay for it, write out a check for, oh, $10 and endorse it to me. I personally guarantee you’ll get your paper. And if it doesn’t come, just send another check and wait by the mailbox.)

Clearly, things have gotten out of hand. Some LSU fans are livid over Susan Gonzalez’s tongue-in-cheek jab at the Tigers in our UL Survival Guide issue. Susan, who loves UL so much she’s stayed there beyond the normal student life expectancy of four years, not only poked fun at LSU, but her own school. Her biggest target? Herself. She made light of the fact she’s changed her major three times and is in her fifth year at the school.

It was funny. Most LSU supporters took it as such. But others took it like a needle to the eye. On the Web site tigerdroppings.com, where the folks who post there just don’t have enough to do, there were, at last count, 182 rants about Susan’s tiny story, which numbered just a few hundred words but seemingly has had more impact on LSU boosters than the Gideon Bible.

The ironic thing is that many of the calls and e-mails chastised Susan for her “hatred” yet spewed more vitriol than Susan could ever hope to muster. And we wonder why Middle East countries can’t solve their differences.

Worse, someone posted her personal e-mail address, which is just flat-out wrong. In this day and age, giving out a young woman’s private e-mail address is to invite all sorts of vileness into her life. That’s not rabid support for your school; that’s cruel and more than a little bit dangerous. She doesn’t deserve that.

This was a joke, people. You can argue if it was funny or not — humor is in the eye and ear of the beholder (I don’t find Woody Allen particularly amusing, others disagree) — but it was a joke nonetheless. It’s a sad commentary on the state of unreasonable passion that we can’t laugh at ourselves.

Obviously, some people can’t. Obviously, some have stepped over the line of loyalty and support into obsession.

And here’s the thing. I spent 20 years as a sports writer and editor at papers across the country. Those players you root for? Those teams? Many of them don’t give two hoots for you. I’ve heard countless players snicker at and denigrate fans who felt privileged to be in their company. (I once watched a group of major league baseball players, taking batting practice before a game, bet on who could hit a heavyset woman in the right field bleachers who was not only a season-ticket holder but worshiped each one of them.)

Now before you go off half-cocked again, it isn’t all players. But it’s enough to make me understand that investing so much of yourself in someone else — someone who isn’t a close friend or a family member — is a waste of precious brain cells. Here’s a hint: If you froth at the mouth because someone’s made a joke about your school, your brain is already fried.

What came through in a lot of the e-mails and phone calls was that UL doesn’t have the right, hasn’t earned the right, to tweak Tony, uh, Mike the Tiger’s nose as Susan did. The gist of their argument is that the Tigers are the big cats on the block, the Ragin’ Cajuns nothing more than pesky gnats. If that’s so, then why does the Tiger growl so angrily when the gnat bites him on the behind?

One guy wrote and lectured — IN CAPITAL LETTERS NO LESS — that A NEWSPAPER IS SUPPOSED TO PRINT FACTS AND NOTHING ELSE. No, a newspaper is supposed to print facts, and opinions, and ideas. It’s supposed to be informative AND entertaining.
Understand, I’ve got no dog in this fight. I didn’t go to either school, didn’t go to a rival school. At The Times, we love both schools, their students and their alumni. It makes sense. They’re our readers.
We love that you read The Times. We’re hopeful you continue to read it and stop being mad at Susan.

1. It was a joke.
2. It was funny.
3. It was, um, a joke.
4. It was commentary.
5. It was funny commentary.
