Where did the "jump shot" craze start and why?

I see more and more football players make a good play and simulate a basketball jump shot for their celebration. Anyone know how that got started?

The Giants DL started it. Strahan was the first. I do not know exactly why but they mentioned it on ESPN when they did a segment on the TD celebration rules.

Now everyone is doing it because there is no rule against it.

I think it really came as a result of football players dunking over the goal post. I'm not sure, but I think Tony Gonzalez was the first to celebrate with the football "dunk". Anyway, just to be different players began to celebrate with the lost art of jump shooting rather than the slam.

Maybe so. I saw one WR do the fade away after a TD this year but DL all over league have done it the majority of this year.

Strahan was indeed the first, and it's a reference to the Jim Jones video for "We Fly High" when they say "Ballin'!!!" in the background and do the jump shot.

I personally like the move Shawne Merriman makes after a great defensive play (can't describe it, you'd have to see it). T.O. did it this past weekend, so I am sure Clair can better describe it, or know of its origins.

I think Chad Johnson did it in the endzone last weekend before he realized that San Diego would score 42 in the second half to beat them.

Chad isn't worried about the other team scoring on his defense. He's just worried about how many touches he gets so he can get into the endzone and dance.
