And unfortunately he has been underwhelming everytime we have seen him - outside of the Peach Bowl, of course.

This popular opinion is based on the fact that the team performed so well in the Peach Bowl despite an only average performance by Flynn. I also think that this stance is one of very little substance. What does it mean to just be a game manager? Does that mean, not good numbers but the team wins? Well, IMO that doesn't necessarily mean the QB is a good game manager - just that the team is good enough as a whole to compensate for a mearly decent QB.

Lets hope Flynn doesn't make as many costly mistakes.

As far as their respective seasons go, I would agree. However, on the nights that we played them - absolutely not.

    Started 0 games?

I'm not the one that started the comparison, I'm only rehashing it.

OK, so the '03 teams was good enough as a whole to compensae for a merel adequate QB? OK I'll buy that one.
    Just one morre question.
Every year since then, has our team been good enough, just had a less than adequate QB?
Or is that our team is absolutely putrid and our great QB can only carry them so far?

Also, Mauck made so many costly mistakes that we won a MNC? Hell, I hope Flynn does end up like that.

I was involved in a lot of debates after the Peach Bowl last year. I knew Russell was the more polished passer and we were a better team with him. Flynn is a very good QB himself. He would start at most other schools. I like his toughness. He brings that pocket awareness as well. He knows when to take off and when to take the sack or throw it away. Overall Russell is a much better passer. He has the better touch and is a true leader. Id much rather have Russell back next year, but Id be very confident with Flynn leading us. Im not sure what to expect with Perrilloux because he rarely played. All I can go by is the games I watched him play in high school. One thing I like to see is the respect they all appear to have for each other. Im especially glad to see that from Perrilloux. Since there is the talk by some that if he doesnt play next year he may transfer. Perrilloux is acting like a team guy, so I expect him to wait his turn here at LSU. I think he is happy with his choice to attend LSU.

Flynn is a good QB. Is he better than JR? No he doesn't have the physical potential that JR has. AND JR has steadily developed into a QB beast. this is a win win for LSU. could Flynn have beat ND? SURE! Give Jimbo some credit for both the QB's and the win over Miami last year. Miles too.

maybe they wouldn't have done as well without JR. From his sheer physical ability you'd think not. but if you remember, in the Miami game, Miles, Fisher and Flynn all said they had allot of time to prepare and get a game plan in suited for Matt. Now maybe if it was a last minute deal it wouldnt have been so great. but it wasnt like that.

It's highly probably that Flynn would start at another school and with the coaches we have, he might be one of the best kept secrets in Div 1 football. it's certainly possible.

It is also VERY much accurate to say that the LSu coaches are smart enough to PLAY the guy that has the most talent and ability to help LSU win. That's JR. JR made some mistakes, he had some SMALL problems and he has developed past them. He seems better every game. His mistakes were the typical young QB at first but as time went by they got less and less. Jimbo no doubt was working with him. I was always woried it wasnt quick enough, but I guess i was wrong. he did a fine job and JR is going to be a helluva Qb at the next level.

ALMOST scary because if he continues to get better, he will certainly be in the top tier of QB's in the NFL.

Just because Jr is great, doesn't mean we can take anything away from Flynn. he's certainly better than Jason White and look at all the hoopla that went on around him.

No need to bash either one. :thumb:

I never said that. Mauck was a very good QB, however he made a lot of mistakes that people seem to look over (a championship or 2 will do that). None the less, he was much more than adequate. What I posed was based on the assumption that had been made by someone other than myself.

In 04, I'll say it this way - we averaged adequate QB play. At times, JaMarcus was amazing (Marcus had his moments as well). At other times, each looked really terrible. Our WRs were also not very good that year. But we also lost 4 games that year, so I wouldn't argue that the team overcame that.

In 05, we had pretty good QB play. JaMarcus had his flaws, made bad decisions etc, but his play was still well above adequate. WRs were improved, but still dropped a lot of passes. Running game struggled when Addai was injured. This year, well, obviously I think QB play was excellent. Running game struggled some and Oline also. WRs were great though.

I don't see your argument. With adequate QB play, we won 9 games. With good to great QB play we won 11.

Ok I will come out of my self imposed Russell/Flynn retirement to make this post right here.

While I have been a unbeliever in Russell, as apposed to a idiot basher, I have watch this kid GROW by leaps and bounds this year. It seems that he is finally starting to grasp the finer points of playing the quarterback position. He is using his size to allow him more time to throw, and he is learning when to run and when to get rid of the ball.

With 2 min in any game his management is unbelieveable, its the rest of the time that could use alittle work, and he still has that tendience to stare down his recievers.

I think he will leave, BUT ONLY because of what everyone saw happen to Matt Lienart in the draft this year. With Oakland getting rid of Shell that might be a good fit for him in someone's new system that they can basically design around him. He will have a very decent Pro Career!

IF he was to stay, for one more year to fine tune those finer points, to get a better understanding of the position, and barring injury, He very well could become a TRUE HALL of FAMER!

While he does still have a few things to get better on, his heart, his ability to learn and evolve into a better quarterback has changed my opinion of Russell the quarterback.

And now in true Bobby Fisher fashion I will once again become a recluse in regards to this subject!

Costly was the wrong word. Our team (and his play most of the time) was good enough to overcome them, so obviously costly would not describe them properly.
