I agree. But we all know that Miami pretty much gave up about two minutes in when they saw they couldn't stop Addai, and couldn't move the ball on the defense. MF did everything asked of him in that game, but he didn't have to do much. The way Crowton talks, this may be the same way the offense works this year. Give it to the backs and let them control the game for us.
I would add all those you mentioned under the "maturity" of a player. Experience a.k.a Playing time is something different. Practice plays are different than real plays in real games, not to mention come from behind situations. That's my opinion.
It was against a top 10 team, but you have to take into account that it was a blowout. The other team didnt step up their game, that's a different thing really. JaMarcus Russell DOMINATED other teams including SEC MS State, he usually scored up to 35 points in just one half of the game, yet those games never really helped him. It was games like Florida, Tennessee and Ole Miss that made JaMarcus what he is now IMO.
You cant also take one pass from about 30 games as a starter and take it as an example. Bad passes are thrown by even Peyton Manning and Tom Brady. Any QB over or under throws his wide open recievers at times, if he does it most of the time that's something else. But I could tell you that JaMarcus' arm pulled some magical plays at times that you will only miss when next season starts and he's not there. And btw, that ND 58 yard TD should have been a sack in the first place, but because of his size and arm, he was able to make the throw. The point is? Arm strength is a very valuable tool for any QB.
The Dude, the pic in your sig is good, three of our most dangerous players next year. Man, I miss footbaw..
Certainly good examples of poor decisions by Russell which in no way reflect upon his arm strength or his ability to make any throw on the field. In that case, Russell made the wrong throw, but not because he couldn't throw it far enough. Those mistakes are more a product of when you release the ball in relation to your routes, not how far you can throw it. Oh yeah, and before we go off on another accuracy rant, Russell was one of the most accurate passers in college the last two years, so please don't bother using his mistakes as an example of why arm strength doesn't matter. The original debate is why arm strength would even matter for a QB, not that it "was everything". ARM STRENGTH, not decisions on when the ball is thrown or how accurate you may be. The simple fact is, if you can only throw it 50 and I can throw it 80, I have more throws in my bag then you do. And that does matter, on every single throw from scrimmage. If it didn't, college recruiters would be recruiting more of us fans. I can personally tear it up for about 30 yards, but not much further, and I am actually a pretty big guy. Even so, somebody who can throw further and (it translates) harder, can eat my lunch at every throw. Accuracy is a completely different argument. You can teach a QB to be more accurate; you can work with receivers to get your timing down; but you will rarely see a QB that does not have arm strength, gain it. I am not a NFL fan either and certainly prefer the college game more myself. However, looking at the top teams in the country, of which LSU is one, do you see much drop off in ability? When we send up to ten players to the NFL, it doesn't look like it to me. All that being said, I have never seen anyone on a forum get their mind changed by another person's opinion, and I doubt it will happen in this instance. However, you might consider why our stupid coaching staff keeps looking for the next great, accurate qb, that just happens to have a cannon for an arm. I don't see many recruiting pages out there touting qb's that can't throw the ball long, over one's that can. Guess they don't know either.
Excellent point, but still does not mitigate the pressure that Flynn had on him being named the starter. It was still his game to lose and the kid performed very well. No, he wasn't heroic, but he didn't have to be. That should not be held against him to argue that Perrilloux should step in front of him based on nothing but hype. We have seen Flynn play and not really seen Perrilloux. We will certainly get a chance to see both this year, but I can already see the seeds are being sewn for some fans to second guess every move of the coaching staff again this year. I know it's a sports forum and the point is to discuss/debate and LSU fans are more rabid than most and have high expectations. Even so, I wish we could make the players we have in there feel appreciated. I suppose it happens to some degree at every school, but it gets a bit tiresome to see players get elevated or torn down without a chance to really prove themselves. Now let's all join hands and sing kumbayah...
Well said, I want to also add that you dont need the best QB to win championships if your team is very talented. That was the case in 03, talented team with an average QB, and that season turned to be damn good. Let's hope next season will be a 03 repeat but undefeated:hihi:
i won't quote what you wrote because it's way too long, but you're not reading what i'm saying. you're framing it to your argument, which is fine, but you're replying to me... so it really isn't fine. the point originally was that no QB should ever have to, or should ever, throw the ball 80 yards in the air. done. that's it, that's all i'm saying. to boost it i'm also saying that while arm strength is good, it's not everything. you want to talk about "intangibles" that come along with arm strength, but nowhere in the term "arm strength" is accuracy implied. 100% of the time it is better to have a qb that can zip it in 20 yards accurately, or throw a 40 yard (in the air) bomb accurately than it is for someone to just chunk the ball 80 freaking yards down the field. especially in college with inexperienced receivers. you brought up peyton manning... why? that dude can't throw it 80 yards, probably not even 70, but that dude can straight zip it in there for 20-30 yards and 75% of the time it's for completions. once again, i'll take that over someone who just chunks it in the air any day of the week. kumbayah
