You make it sound like JR has never completed a midrange pass in his career. Yes JR can throw it 85 yards, but he can also zip it in 40 yards and 20 yards or whatever. I've seen him do it all year long. Ok, and when people say that JR can throw it 85 yards, they're not saying he has or he will, they are saying he has ARM STRENGTH. Arm Strength as in he's able to throw it to receivers on the run, or throwing across the body. Thats the only arm strength that matters, and he has that. I suggest watching this video if you need proof that JR can throw midrange and deep balls http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ly_1gj5I-Bk
Actually I did read your post though you don't seem to have read mine. I never mentioned Peyton Manning, that was another poster. And the original argument was why it mattered if a qb could throw it 80 yards (arm strength), and not if he actually would in a game situation. The argument was whether it was better to be able to throw a ball 80 yards or just 50 yards. So you are arguing with yourself here. Regardless of your acceptance, the fact is that arm strength does matter. And no, accuracy is not implied with arm strength. Where did I say that? I don't in any way mean to imply that a guy that benches 500 lbs or has great mechanics and can hum the ball 80 yards is better than an actual accurate qb. Where did this come into play?? Who was talking about accuracy?? You want to know where arm strength matters in your game situation? How about those lovely little wide receiver screens that LSU ran so much this year? Notice how quickly Russell got that throw out there, regardless of what side of the field it was?? That is where it translates, as well as every other throw on the field. Nobody here, least of all me implied that arm strength was everything, but to imply that it is a non factor, as some have done, is simply incorrect. And, of course, the arm strength discussion was started about Perrilloux in relation to Russell, not Flynn who will likely be the starter. This being the case, if Perrilloux has a stronger arm than Flynn, it will not be the factor that keeps him off the field, it will be his accuracy or decision making. For the purpose of this discussion on the pros and cons of arm strength, accuracy and decision making is implied to be equal.
Wow, Im sorry if that offended you, but there is no reason to get angry about it.:thumb: The thing you are assuming here is a QB that has a strong arm will only zip it 80 yards. Arm strength isnt just an 80 yard throw, it helps when you're on the run or any other hard situations when the feet arent set for the throw, thus the QB has to rely ONLY on his arm to make the throw. This arm strength will make the difference between a lofty incomplete/intercepted pass or a 30 yard laser bomb. Im not sure if we can see a truly 80-90 yard pass ever, unless on a Raiders Hail Mary or something.:hihi: And it seems you havent even read my post, I brought up Peyton as an example that any QB can under or over throw his recievers, mistakes like that happen with the best. I didnt bring up Peyton Manning arm strength wise. Please read my WHOLE post before replying.:thumb:
One of the benefits of having superior arm strength is that the ball does not have to be lofted high in the air in order to reach a receiver. Also, where arm strength translates into a positive factor the most is on outs or quick slants to the wideouts, therefore I'll take the guy with arm strength and accuracy over a guy with only accuracy. I guy like JR. If RP shows in practice that he can make throws that Flynn cannot, accurately, than I'd assume he could move up the depth chart if the other parts of his game or equal to Flynn's. The coaches have to weigh everything when they make these decisions and they get to see a hell of a lot, especially when they watch film of practices from the overhead shots. I think Ryan will grow in confidence, get real comfortable and start exhibiting the talent he has as spring practice continues and when fall camp begans and make this a hell of a QB competition, but I also think Flynn is very smart & talented and will make it extremely hard for RP to take the job away.
Flynn will be the starter against MSU. His game performance will dictate if he keeps the job, but I think he'll hang on to it. RP will get some playing time, mostly mop up duty. Barring a Flynn injury, he'll have to wait another year to start.
Honestly, I expect RP to look slightly better than Flynn in the Spring game. I think the coaches will recognize that there are some things Ryan can do better than Flynn. However, Miles is going to feel like Matt wants it more & deserves it for all the hard work he's put in, plus his maturity & experience. Ryan would have to look much better than Matt in order to get the starting nod, IMO. But this situation is different from JR-Matt. There wasn't anything that JR couldn't do, so there was no need to bring Matt in. The only time Matt came in was mop up duty. I'm hopeful that since RP brings some different things to the table, he'll be able to get plenty of playing time other than just mop-up duty.
Looks like Miles his seriously considering a 2 QB system next year, well at least he is leaving the option open. I like the idea of giving it a shot but maybe wait until after the Miss St. and VaTech game. LINK
