The game was marred by an early-week incident where a former LSU player was caught spying on Sooner practices. Common source of confusion (myself included until a couple of years ago) for fans---New Years Day and beyond bowl games are referred to by the actual calendar year in which the game takes place, not by the recently completed season. This is why LSU won the 2003 national title by winning the 2004 Sugar Bowl.

I believe it's considered the 1949 Sugar Bowl and the 1950 Sugar Bowl, regardless of the calendar year.
