I know its early but I am tired of hearing about who LSU will and won't be able to sign. Rivals has Rueben Randle, Davenport, Conner and Lacy in the top 100 from LA. LSU should sign all of these guys. Aside from Mike Ford, what other recruits that are in the top 100 will have LSU high on their list. What are some guys that could be right on the outside of the top 100 that LSU has a shot at. Southern Cal is demolishing next year already. Do we have a shot at making it interesting in the rivals rankings for next year?

Yeah, so let's start worrying about who we will or won't sign next year eh?

*EDIT* To add, that we've waited this long and you want to bail 6 days before LOI day?

From a reputable person who came up with an Elite 150:

    5. Devon Kennard (DE)6'4" / 235 pounds / Desert Vista HS / Phoenix (AZ) / Top 5 Contenders: USC, Arizona State, Florida, LSU, Notre Dame
    - Complete package at DE. Kennard is the rare top-flight pass rusher who keeps containment, is coachable, and has a high football IQ. Had 24.5 sacks as a junior, will have an instant impact in college.

    6. Russell Shepard (QB)
6'1" / 185 pounds / Cypress Ridge HS / Houston (TX) / Top 5 Contenders: Texas, Oklahoma, Michigan, Florida, LSU
    - Top dual-threat QB in the nation. Shep is a dynamic athlete who possesses rare leadership qualities, and is a more advanced passer than he gets credit for.

    8. Jamarkus McFarland (DT)
6'3" / 285 pounds / Lufkin HS / Lufkin (TX) / Top 5 Contenders: Texas, LSU, Florida, Texas A&M, USC
    - Well-rounded DT that requires a double-team. McFarland has plus physical skills, a high motor, and is productive against good competition.

    11. Reuben Randle (WR)
6'3" / 195 pounds / Bastrop HS / Bastrop (LA) / Top 5 Contenders: LSU, Alabama, Miami, Mississippi State, Tennessee
    - Rangy athlete with all the skills to become a dominant wideout in college. Randle is arguably the best player in a very good Louisiana class and could end up the best WR ever from the Strop City.

    13. Kevin Brent (S)
5'11" / 195 pounds / South Oak Cliff HS / Dallas (TX) / Top 5 Contenders: Oklahoma, Texas, Texas A&M, Nebraska, LSU
    - Doesn't get enough hype. Brent is an intimidating safety with plus coverage skills. Think Major Wright and more natural in space.

    14. Chris Davenport (DT)
6'4" / 320 pounds / Mansfield HS / Mansfield (LA) / Top 5 Contenders: LSU, Alabama, USC, Miami, Ole Miss
    - Big kid with plus technique and good leverage for his size. Chris doesn't have the pure speed of Jacobbi or Jamarkus but he's one of the most productive DTs I've seen at the HS level.

    19. Craig Loston (S)
6'1" / 185 pounds / Eisenhower HS / Aldine (TX) / Top 5 Contenders: Oklahoma, Florida, LSU, Texas, Texas A&M
    - Manchild who knows how good he is. Best at roaming centerfield, doesn't play as physical as he could. Loston has the potential of a Taylor Mays or Chad Jones. Should be an interesting recruitment.

    28. Michael Ford (RB)
5'10" / 195 / Leesville HS / Leesville (LA) / Top 5 Contenders: LSU, Alabama, Auburn, Florida State, Florida
    - Once Ford stops bouncing and learns how to use his natural strength he could become the premier tailback in this class.

    30. Jordan Hunt (LB)
6'2" / 215 pounds / Franklin County HS / Meadville (MS) / Top 5 Contenders: LSU, Mississippi State, Ole Miss, Ohio State, Auburn
    - Flat out the best player in Mississippi yet underrated, has Patrick Willis written all over him.

    31. Jawanza Starling (S)
6'2" / 195 / Lincoln HS / Tallahassee (FL) / Top 5 Contenders: Florida State, Georgia, LSU, Auburn, USC
    - Next great Lincoln DB is nearly as good as Pat Watkins was.

    34. Justin Chaisson (DE)
6'4" / 255 pounds / Bishop Gorman HS / Las Vegas (NV) / Top 5 Contenders: Oklahoma, Nebraska, Florida, LSU, Oregon
    - High motor DE with a great frame may develop into a great three-technique DT.

    40. Donovan Tate (S)
6'2" / 195 pounds / Cartersville HS / Cartersville (GA) / Top 5 Contenders: Georgia, Florida, Alabama, LSU, USC
    - One of the most versatile athletes in the nation, Tate can play 4 positions in college.

    54. Dexter Pratt (LB)
6'2" / 220 pounds / Navasota HS / Navasota (TX) / Top 5 Contenders: Oklahoma, Texas, Texas A&M, LSU, Oklahoma State
    - Extremely versatile athlete with plus strength and COD skills, very similar to Richard Samuel.

    70. Dyron Dye (DE)
6'4" / 215 pounds / Seminole HS / Sanford (FL) / Top 5 Candidates: Miami, Florida State, Florida, LSU, Central Florida
    - Pure edge rusher who has a great frame to develop. Very high ceiling.

    73. Alex Okafor (DE)
6'4" / 220 pounds / Pflugerville HS / Pflugerville (TX) / Top 5 Candidates: Texas, Nebraska, LSU, Miami, Texas Tech
    - Pass rush specialist with plus explosion and relentless pursuit. Could develop into a three-down guy eventually.

    74. Tana Patrick (LB)
6'3" / 215 pounds / North Jackson HS / Stevenson (AL) / Top 5 Candidates: Alabama, LSU, Georgia, Auburn, Tennessee
    - Injury hampered some of junior season, still a high-end SLB or WLB prospect.

    75. Montrell Conner (RB)
6'2" / 210 pounds / Ouachita HS / Monroe (LA) / Top 5 Contenders: LSU, Alabama, Ole Miss, Clemson, Oklahoma
    - Didn't have film until late in junior year but has one of the highest ceilings in this class. Superb athlete who gets better later in games.

    76. Marcus Davis (S)
6'1" / 185 pounds / Clear Creek HS / League City (TX) / Top 5 Candidates: Oklahoma, USC, Texas A&M, LSU, Texas
    - One of the more highly recruited juniors is the new breed of safety who can turn and run with any receiver.

    84. Jeremy Smith (RB)
5'10" / 195 pounds / Union HS / Tulsa (OK) / Top 5 Contenders: Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, LSU, Alabama, Tennessee
    - Most complete tailback in the Southwest.

    86. Jonathan Davis (LB)
5'8" / 205 pounds / Tucker HS / Tucker (GA) / Top 5 Contenders: Georgia, Alabama, Miami, Florida State, LSU
    - Yes, he's not very tall, so he'll be a liability in coverage. But Davis has elite skills in every other area.

    100. Xavier Su'a Filo (OT)
6'4" / 275 pounds / Timpview HS / Provo (UT) / Top 5 Contenders: BYU, LSU, Colorado, Ohio State, USC
    - One to watch as the evaluation period comes and goes, Filo was arguably the top OL at the All-American Combine.

Others that will be highly listed (top 250) that LSU should be in contention for:

    Christian Michael (TX) - RB
    Darrington Sentimore (LA) - DT
    A.J. McCarron (AL) - QB
    Chad Bumphis (MS)
    Chris Williams (TX)
    Hasan Lipscomb (TX) - RB
    Chris Faulk (LA) - OL
    Pat Patterson (MS)
    Jacob Karam (TX) - QB
    Kelvin York (LA) - RB
    Kenny Bell (LA) - WR
    Jaz Reynolds (TX) - WR
    Alex Singleton (LA) - ATH
    Alex Smith (MS) - DB
    DJ Banks (LA) - ATH
    Carneal Ainsworth (LA) - OL
    Patrick Lewis (LA) - OL
    Josh Downs (LA) - OL

    That's 38 of the top 250. And it's early.

Of the ones you listed which ones do you feel we have a better than average chance at landing next year?

Devon Kennard holds offers from almost every Pac10 school and was one in a group of recruits out in SoCal this weekend. They met other recruits/commits and took in the ASU/USC bball game. He's a really good one.

Shaquelle Evans was offered by the irish late last week I think and by USC on Saturday.

So many good players next year, it's going to be a national battle.

My early guess on positions LSU should really do well with (and in this order):

    1) RB (3)
    2) LB (3, maybe 4)
    3) DL (4)
    4) OL (4, maybe 5)
    5) WR (3)
    6) DB (3)
    7) QB (1, maybe 2)

LSU will get 20-24, depending on how many we finish up with in 08 (25 now, 29 possible).

    By position:

QB - Karam, McCarron, Sheppard?, Highsmith, Thomas, Beaver
RB - Ford, Lacey, Michael, Lipscomb, York, Duplessis, Oku, Smith, Brown
WR - Randle, Janzen, Sheppard?, Reynolds, Bell, Jefferson, Singleton, Appleton, Evans
OL - Ainsworth, Lewis, Faulk, Brockers, Autrey, Downs, Filo
DL - Davenport, Okafor, Chaisson, Sentimore, Warmsley, Lanier, Kennard, Dent, Dye
LB - Hunt, Conner, Patrick, TJones, Telfort, Ferrell, Pratt, Davis, Ledford, Baziel
DB - Janzen, Loston, Starling, Banks, Thomas, Davis, Tate, Smith

Question as to whether Sheppard will play QB or WR in college. Texas wants him and is willing to try him out at QB. I think LSU sees him as a WR, which may hurt our chances ultimately.

Hopefully we have enough info to get our juices flowing.

It's gonna be a special class.

We will have the pick of the litte, so to speak in 09. We are more limited to scholarships (20-24 range). If we are down to only 20, then we really have to be careful who to pick and I don't foresee some early questionable signees in that case.

Should be a top 5 class, and probably rivaling the 3.88 star avg we had in 07.

The breakdown could end up 3 five star, 15 four star, and 4 three stars. That would beat the 3.88 average (almost ending up at 4.00).

Hopefully my boy CParso will delve into the class soon and give us his wishlist along with early possibles.
