1. I was watching the LSU-Auburn game again and noticed that with about 5 minutes to go in the game LSU was faced with a 4th down at the Auburn 38. I believe it was 4th and 11 or 10. We punted, trying to pin them dip but ended up kciking it into the endzone. My point is shouldn't we have gone for it? It is the same risk trying tp pin then deep than it is to try and make the first down. If we convert, we get in FG range and have another set of downs. Just wondering if anyone else noticed this.
  2. The way our defense was playing, the prospects of Auburn driving 80+ yards for a score were pretty slim... and a fourth and 11 is a very unlikely proposition.
  3. that's a pet peeve of mine. I would almost never punt within the 40 of another opponent....I whine every game I see coaches do this for a 15 yard net punt when most go out the endzone.

    drives me nuts.
  4. That extra 18 yards can make a team have to make 2 more first downs in order to score a TD. That can be very important.
  5. The book ...

Inside the 30 ... yeah, go for it ... best play a short pass and try to set up good blocking for the first because they'll play soft ... screen if you can get away from it ... even if you don't make it ... they still have poor field position

From the forty ... unless your punter sux ... pin their azzes ... every time ... especially with our dee

  6. I think you're almost always better off going for it. Especially from the 35 in. I dont buy it. This isnt pop warner where games are usually 7-0 final.
  7. I say go for it.

Even if we dont make it then they still have to go 65 yards for the winning TD. If they only had to get a FG to win, then yes punt it, but they had to score a TD. Looking back that was a pretty bad call.
  8. of course, they pretty much contradict themselves. you dont do it if you have a horrible defense. With a solid one, you do it.

don't listen to these guys, Im the real, virtual coach. heh
  9. Well under certain circumstances I agree that you go for it. But in the situation LSU was in, you punt it. Had Buster Davis (I think that's who was downfield) made the catch at the 5 and downed the ball as was scripted, I don't think Auburn makes the trip 95 yards. It was the proper call, and Saban would do it every time.

If the score is 34-28 LSU, then you go for it, since the other team is obviously not able to stop you very much and your defense is not playing that well. In that case, 65 vs 80 yards isn't as big of a deal.

So basically your automatic go for it inside the 40 yard line is not very wise in all situations.

  10. wasnt referring to that exact situation....just stating what i feel in general about punting within the 40 and used this thread to whine. To say its the "correct" decision in that situation is probably the right call but to claim it was the proper call, not true. if he goes for it and makes the first then that was the correct call because LSU wins.

If they simply needed a FG then I suppose its more of a no brainer.
