TUSCALOOSA | Details regarding the injury to University of Alabama junior receiver Tyrone Prothro were released Tuesday in the form of a written statement from UA team physician Dr. Les Fowler.

"Tyrone Prothro suffered an open comminuted fracture of his left tibia and fibula during the Alabama-Florida game on Oct. 2, 2005. He underwent emergency surgery that night to stabilize the fracture.

"During the post-operative period, he developed an infection, secondary to bacterial infection at the time of his injury. He did not develop a staph infection.

"Since that time he has undergone aggressive treatment and antibiotic for the infection. To date, the attempts to eradicate the infection appear to have been successful.

"All wounds that he suffered are healing well following the procedure necessary to close those wounds.

"At Tyrone's and his mother's request, details of his hospitalization have not been released until today. Further updates will be released at their request.

"We expect Tyrone to remain hospitalized for several more days. The Sports Medicine staff at The University of Alabama is optimistic for a full recovery following this very severe injury.

Damn, thats sad to hear. Kid was electric and probably as good as Skyler at the return game. Sad to see him out. Hope he has a full recovery and can play next year.

Sorry for Protho. I wish I would have never seen that injury, because every time I hear or read his name, I visualize it again. It was sick how often they replayed it.

Dang, fine player. It's a shame to see him miss out on such a great year that he had developing, but it's good to see he may recover. :thumb:

Thanks for the update. I am glad it is not staph. That stuff is quite nasty. I had back surgery 15 years ago. I caught severe a case of staph and had to fight it for close to a year before it cleared up. They had to put a line in my chest and give me liquid antibiotics. I lost close to thirty pounds and what little muscle I had.

I pray full recovery means that he will play again and not that he will walk without a limp.

I sure hope he his able to return to football, it would be a shame for the game to lose such a player. I wish there was a site that the SEC fans could tell him that we all wish him well.

Sorry if already posted, but President Bush sent Pro a get-well-letter this morning. Got to feel bad for Prothro, nice of Bush.

From the information that I have read it was a tib/fib fracture. If I am correct in that, most usually do pretty well with that, they are two long bone which is good because it does not involve a joint. Lone bones usually heal much stronger than before being broken depending on the type of break. I hope too that he does well, and it is not to uncommon to get an infection regardless of the type when a bone breaks.
