There are articles about this everywhere. Most of them, just repeat what another has said. There were a few things that popped out at me while reading over the different reports.

    • Notice what Brand has to say. (the double speak doesn't shock me). NCAA President Myles Brand said during a conference call with reporters that he believes money supersedes racial or regional divides.

      Yet, weigh that against this...

Historically black colleges and universities received more than 50 waivers eliminating the chance of scholly reductions. HBCU's received 13% of the penalties handed out. (fits the nationwide average, btw.) Without those waivers, where would those schools be?
    • 11 of the 112 penalized teams were from BCS conferences, yet, no BCS school received a warning letter/penalty letter. It's just another example of how BCS schools are reinvesting monies back into Academic centers, etc., for their athletes.
    • 13 of the 49 schools receiving letters were from Louisiana. Not surprising considering the hell the state went though last year. How on earth do situations like Katrina not give those 13 schools a chance for a waiver?
    • I have to give a nod to Tulane with all 7 of its teams scoring a 940 or better.
    • One more thing on Brand...
“It’s more about low-income, low-resource schools," he said. “We’re concerned about all schools with a low-support basis, and there are a number of HBCUs in that category. We’re trying to provide them with the resources to do better."

I could go into a playoff debate here because it would give the NCAA more control over the monies from college football. But, again, I see this as double speak. "We need to get them more resources, but we won't make a move to do such."

    The whole idea is stupid....

Damn you Russell for hurting our APR because you wanted to be the number 1 draft pick! LSU obviously failed because you did not get a diploma.

    +1

I don't care if any student that isn't a friend or related to me graduates.

Athletes are given every opportunity to succeed academically. If they choose not to it's their fault not the University's.

If a player quits school, transfers or declares early for a draft, they do not hurt the APR if they are in good academic standing.

No joke. Russell just made his life way better. He wouldn't make near the money if he had stayed and graduated with a 7.6 GPA.

The more articles I read on this today the more and more I'm reminded of what the NCAA had to say about "they don't govern academics." We've seen two examples of this within the SEC in the last few years starting with the ole' chair stacking classes and walking classes up at UT.

No need to go into the situation we've heard about the last year with another school in the SEC.

It's a PR game, nothing more. Good PR for the NCAA when schools show academic progress (even though it really isn't clearly defined) and bad PR for the schools who don't show that progress.

I feel this will remain the same as long as the schools in question remain accredited. Will the NCAA take a stand against SACS? I just can't see that having the slimest of possibilities.
