1. 16-4 2.29 era

Not going to be easy wrestling it away from Max Scherzer, who also has 16 wins (16-6) and a 2.28 era.

The problem is Scherzer has some 65 more strikeouts than Nola.

So Nola will need to get to 20 wins, lower his era even a little further and hope Scherzer falters on the way in with some subpar outings.
  2. Nola outdueled Scherzer twice last week in head to head competition. Didn't get the win in 2nd game became of a blown save.
  3. I wish that counted for something but unfortunately for the voters they'll just look at the stats and that K column is going to stick out like a sore thumb.

It will need to end up being something like:

    Nola 20-4 2.15 era 225 Ks
    Scherzer 17-9 2.48 era 303 Ks

And even that difference may not be enough for Nola to win it. That's how much strikeouts are weighed.
  4. Nola is the stopper for the Phillies. Nobody on the staff other than Arrieta is even close. Scherzer is surrounded by pitching talent.
  5. He is. I'm from outside of Philly. Everyone loves him and hates pretty much the rest of the team right now given their nose dive.

Also, I haven't looked up the stats, but I thought DeGrom was the runaway favorite for NL Cy Young.
  6. DeGrom has a great era but last time I looked he was 8-8.
  7. True. I guess it’s just my opinion then. Shouldn’t matter whether your team can hit.
  8. Steve Carlton won 27 games and the Cy Young on a last place Phillies team.
  9. Mike Hampton went 22-4 with an excellent era and still lost the damn thing to the big unit because of all the strikeouts.

    Johnson 17-9 but 364 strikeouts.

On second thought, Randy deserved it.

I agree DeGrom should not be overlooked. That era is in rarified air territory.
  10. Nolan Ryan for the Astros once led the league in era and had an 8-16 record. True story.
