Overrated? The pistol was in the wrong era. He was like a guy using an AK-47 or mac10 at the revolutionary war while everyone else is using muskets. I wasn't old enough to see pistol back in the day but weren't his NBA teammates so jealous of him(and his salary) they basically crapped out on him on purpose?

Another hack who disparages the success of others.

Has he seen the NBA lately? If there was just one player like the Pistol playing in the NBA today I might bother to watch.

Did you notice the poll on the right? Pete is dead last. Only 1% of those who voted think he is over rated

This is rediculous. Pete Maravich once scored 68 points aganst the Knicks while being guarded by Walt Frazier who was considered one of the all time greatest defensive guards. Pete Rose had over 4400 hits. Nolan Ryan had over 5700 strikeouts and 7 no hitters and he was still a power pitcher at the age of 45. Joe Namath played his greatest game in the single most important game ever played in the NFL. The Jets beating the Johnny Unitas led Colts showed the world that the expansion teams from the AFL could play on an equal level with the more established teams from the old NFL. I'm surprised that whoever put that list together didn't have Muhammad Ali and Michael Jordan and Babe Ruth on it.

Keep in mind ESPN had a top ten list of the biggest Heros/Sports figures of all times.

Micheal Jordon was not on the list... Micheal Jordan. However Magic Johnson was #6... Also excluded Joe Montana..

As far as I am concerned, that pretty showed how clueless ESPN really is...

I saw this countdown on SportsCenter yesterday. While I disagreed on Pete, I did agree on Namath, Lynn Swann, and Deion.

This is what the guy says about Pistol Pete:

    6. Pete Maravich
Pistol Pete, perhaps the most spectacular college player ever, was a very good, but not great, NBA player. A marginal Hall of Famer if you look at his pro stats, and shouldn't have made the list of the NBA's top 50 players of all time.

A Marginal Hall of Famer???!! So now just getting into the Hall is not validation of greatness? There are degrees of Hall of Fame worthiness? This guy is an idiot. About Lynn Swann, "he made the Pro Bowl "only" 3 of 9 seasons? So, what? Youve got to be a Pro Bowler every year beginnig with your rookie season to qualify as not overrated? Joe Namath? The guy won a Super Bowl on gimpy knees. He was not overrated. He was a cripple.
