Cleveland = NFlL LSU = NCAA you are comparing apples and oranges. Spurrier didn't do squat in the NCAA but anyone who witnessed his reign of terror in the SEC won't question his coaching ability. You also failed to mention that Miami played Washington, FSU, Florida, and VTech the final two seasons that Davis was in Miami. No one can argue that Davis recruited a SICK amount of talent to Miami. Do you realize that 29 players from his final team were drafted in the past three years? TWENTY NINE!! 18 of those players were taken in the first three rounds. Anyone who can evaluate and develop talent like that has a chance to win anywhere.
Butch was rebuilding the program from after probation. Coker won 1 MNC and almost won another with Butch's talent because Butch had just starting getting good recruits into Miami. It's not his fault he wasnt arround to mold them. Look at all the #1 draft choices. He had a few his first few years, but look how they turned out after he left. They were all young when he was coaching them, and came into their own under Coker. Notice as the years go on, the 1st rd'ers get more plentiful. Keep in mind he left in 00', meaning he left all this talent for Coker. 99 Edge Nick Williams Scott Covington 00 Bubba Franks Mike Boireau Nate Webster Richard Mercier Mondriel Fulcher 01 Dan Morgan Damione Lewis Santana Moss Reggie Wayne James Jackson Leonard Myers Andre King 02 Bryant McKinnie Shockey Buchannon Ed Reed Mike Rumph Portis Bilba Davenport James Lewis Daryl Jones Gonzalez 03 Andre Johnson McDougle McGahee Joseph Andrew Williams Green Walters Dorsey
Which big games would those be? I just looked at his record at Miami. Except for one season, it's fairly ordinary against a loser schedule. Plenty of wins against the dregs of the NCAA, including annual pastings of Rutgers, Pitt (back when they sucked), Florida A&M (that's right, look it up), La Tech, ECU, and Temple (oooh, those Owls are scary). Plenty of losses to ranked teams. His teams just weren't as dominant as people believe they were. Please God, I'd rather have Geena Davis coaching LSU than Butch Davis.
Good points. I think Davis has the talent to do the job my question is does he still have the fire and desire to do what it takes to continue what Saban has started. Saban has laid a strong foudation but it will take just as much hard work and commitment to sustain it as it did to build it. The next coach needs to hungry and hard working not just looking to ride the gravy train that Saban started. Hopefully Skip will take his time and make a wise choice from the many candidates that seem available to the Tigers.
If you can answer that question there are people who are willing to pay you lots of money. It's a crap shoot like the NFl draft and recruiting are at some level. You can judge talent and ability all day. It's hard to judge desire and drive to win.
...the latest on Butch Davis. He is getting help for his anxiety problems from a holistic medicine student in Southern California who has delt with his own anxiety problems and believes he has "the cure".
Correct but there are ways to better your odds of making the right decision. The way it ended in Cleveland and the reports of his stress problems worry me. Much like it was at Florida for Zook everyone here will be looking for the next coach to have an equal amout of success as did Saban and that puts extra pressure on an already high pressure job. I wouldn't be disappointed with Butch as coach but I would be a little worried until he showed he was up to the challenge this time around.
