Subject: "Thank You" from Chancellor O'Keefe

A hearty Tiger "Thank You" to the thousands of football fans who welcomed our Virginia Tech visitors last weekend. I have received countless compliments about the graceful and diplomatic manner in which we observed the Va Tech tragedy and the marvelous way in which we warmly embraced Hokie fans. These are just a couple of these comments:
". . . the Tech community that traveled to Baton Rouge has been
thoroughly impressed with the hospitality and atmosphere. I have heard not one bad word and most people are speechless at the kindness shown."
"I read many posts on an LSU forum last spring about "Today we're all HOKIES." Let me say that the warmth and generosity with which we were treated was unlike anything I have ever experienced. Your fans and your community did themselves proud. I left Baton Rouge and LSU with many fond memories (in spite of a poor showing by our football team), which I will share with anyone who will listen. Hopefully we can all learn a little from your example. Today I am a TIGER."
I am extremely proud, and I thank you for putting our University in such a positive light. You are Tiger fans in the truest sense!
In addition to these overwhelmingly positive reactions, however, I am concerned by the actions of fans whose inappropriate behavior - for example, mocking and taunting Va Tech fans, tailgating and leaving alcohol inside of buildings and ignoring requests of building security - taints an otherwise wonderful tailgating experience and Saturday night
in Tiger Stadium. This behavior represents a small minority, to be sure, but the actions of these few have a decidedly detrimental effect. I ask that you help me get out the word that such behavior is unwelcome and will not be tolerated.
LSU delights in welcoming its football fans to campus each week and tries to create a friendly, hospitable environment for the enjoyment of all. I ask that all members of the LSU family, as well as visitors to our campus, act responsibly and use thoughtful judgment. Let's all show the Tiger pride we're known for.
Geaux Tigers!
