LSU, Cavalier coaches have Hendry connection

Mainieri and O'Connor got Notre Dame to Omaha in 2002. The next year, O'Connor finally got an offer he couldn't refuse after passing up several opportunities to leave Mainieri's staff.
“I knew when Virginia called that it was the right opportunity for him,'' Mainieri said. “I didn't want to lose him, and when Brian left, I felt like I had my right arm cut off.''
Before parting ways, O'Connor and Mainieri made a promise.
“We agreed not to play each other unless the NCAA required it,'' Mainieri said. “When the brackets were announced, we talked about how if we both would advance, we would have to play each other in game one of the College World Series. We agreed that would be an appropriate time.''
That time comes Saturday, and Hendry will be at Rosenblatt Stadium to watch. Hendry knows the matchup will be uncomfortable for both coaches, just as it was when he was at Creighton and the Bluejays played an Air Force team coached by Mainieri.
