FormerMississippi State Coach, Pat McMahon's six-year career as Florida's head baseball coach ended Thursday afternoon when he was fired by the Gators. At the end of the 2006 season, he was reportedly contacted by both LSU and Notre Dame regarding head coaching vacancies, but told them he was happy at Florida. After arriving Florida from Mississippi State in 2001, McMahon led the Gators to their first two Super Regional berths and their first appearance in the College World Series Championship play at Omaha in 2005. The Gators had a combined record of 57-58 in 2006 and 2007 and they failed to make a NCAA Regional either year. Florida announced it will now move forward in a search for its next coach. Virginia coach Brian O'Connor, Kentucky coach and former Gator assistant coach John Cohen, and Vanderbilt coach Tim Corbin are names that have been mentioned.
