There is a nice article on Brandon Bass in today's Birmingham News. I can't get a link but it is an AP article out of Baton Rouge by Mary Foster so it may be in the BR paper. Sounds like he has his head on right.

BATON ROUGE, La. -- Brandon Bass knew what they were saying about his future when he left Capital High School.

Not many young black men escaped the drug- and crime-ridden streets around Capital unless it was for jail or the cemetery.

And he knew the odds were on the side of the doubters. He'd seen friends from middle school head to prison or die. While he was earning honors he had teammates who would never play college ball, let alone earn a degree.

"I was self-motivated," the LSU forward said. "But I was more motivated by the people who only saw the stereotype of people from that area. I was motivated by all the people who thought I'd fail."
