BATON ROUGE, La. -- As LSU players reported to campus on Wednesday, head coach Les Miles said he understood that an 8-5 record and a bowl victory do not necessarily equate to a successful season for his program.
"Eight wins is unacceptable," Miles said as he met with reporters at the team's indoor practice field, where banners marking the program's accomplishments line the walls. "We want to play for championships.
LSU failed to post a winning record in the Southeastern Conference last year, only one season after they'd won a national championship.

The Tigers needed a victory against Georgia Tech in the Chick-fil-A Bowl in order to finish 8-5.
"This program is designed to hang banners in this building," Miles said. "That's what we have to do."
In his first season as Nick Saban's replacement in 2005, LSU lost to Georgia in the SEC title game.
"We fell a little short," Miles said.
In his second year, Miles led the Tigers to an 11-2 record and a Sugar Bowl victory against Notre Dame.
Miles' third season reached its climax with LSU's defeat of Ohio State in the BCS championship game. But, the Tigers were plagued by quarterback problems and an inconsistent defense in 2008. LSU won only three of its eight league games.
"There were lessons we needed to learn from last year," Miles said. "There have been some great examples in this program from past seasons. The players know how to do it and know how to play."
The Tigers will have a much better quarterback situation with two sophomores - Jordan Jefferson and Jarrett Lee - who took snaps in big games last season. Jefferson, who started the last two games, is No. 1 on the depth chart when practice begins Thursday.
"We have two quarterbacks with experience," Miles said. "This football team will be much better by execution at that position."
LSU's preseason camp will run through Saturday, Aug. 22. Fall semester classes will begin Aug. 24. The Tigers will open their season at Washington on Sept. 5.
"This is a great time of year," Miles said. "We've really had a strong summer. We are expecting the efforts we'll get in two-a-day camp to be what we need. We want to play dominant football."
