Indianapolis(AP) The National Football League today reached agreement with the NCAA to allow the BCS committee to restructure the current NFL playoff system. Incoming NFL commissioner, Roger Goodell told reporters, “It was obvious the old system of having a playoff wasn’t working. The model used by the NCAA is light years ahead of what we were using and this change couldn’t come fast enough.” Former commissioner, Paul Tagliabue added, “Last year’s playoff was a disaster. We all knew the two best teams were Indianapolis and Seattle, but did they get to play? No, Pittsburgh won, and they didn’t even win their division. There’s no way a team who finishes second in their conference should ever play in the Championship game.” Under the new BCS pro structure, this year’s Super Bowl will match Chicago and Indianapolis, regardless of how the remainder of the regular season plays out. “This is precisely the way to do it”, said Tony Dungy, coach of the Indianapolis Colts. “This should be our second consecutive trip to the Super Bowl. Last year our players were depressed they had to participate in a stupid playoff and it showed in their performance. We were the best team and we should have automatically gone to the Super Bowl.” Under the new format, the NFL season will be completed on December 31,, 2006. The Super Bowl has been rescheduled to Sunday, March 4, 2007. Goodell defended the late date by saying, “Why would we want to reinvent the wheel? The BCS system works, and the long layoff adds to the excitement. These are professional football players we’re talking about here. If they can’t keep themselves fit and hungry for 50 or 60 days, they shouldn’t play the game.” The new format will also match the next best eight teams in four “bowl-like” games to be played two weeks prior to the Super Bowl. The participating teams will be selected after the completion of the regular season. Nick Saban, head coach of the Miami Dolphins said, “I wish we had known about these changes before the season started. I’m sure our team would have performed better if they had known they could play in mid-February against another “best of the rest” team. We’ll sure be ready next year.” This is really good new, huh?
It's been a good system for years, why change it? Tony Dungy is just upset because although Peyton is good he's never been a champion and unless he gets a good defense he probably never will be.:helmet:
