LSU preseason All-American center Glen Davis is nursing an injured quadriceps muscle, Tigers coach John Brady said today.

"I'm not sure if Glen pulled a quad or strained a quad in the game,'' Brady said. "I'm not sure of his availability for practice today. Everybody has injuries this time of year. We really need him playing and need him at full speed for us to have any success at all.''

Brady would not elaborate on Davis' status for Wednesday night's game at Ole Miss.

"I hope (he will play Wednesday),'' Brady said. "He got treatment yesterday. We're going to see how he goes today. I don't know anything right now. That's too far in advance. ... I hope he would be able to play. Any momentum that we were able to create Saturday, we need him in the lineup to keep it going.''

Guilbeau's take on LSU's path to the Tourny.

    It could happen

As bad as the LSU men's basketball team has looked this season, it could still make the NCAA Tournament. Stranger things have happened.

LSU is in dead last in the Southeastern Conference West at the moment at 3-7. But it is only two games out of first place, which is amazing. Ole Miss, which LSU has already beaten, is tied for first with Alabama at 5-5. LSU had Alabama beat in the Pete Maravich Assembly Center but blew it. LSU travels to Ole Miss Wednesday and needs a win to keep its slim hopes alive and have a chance to finish 7-9 in the league.

A 7-9 team may win the West this season, but this season could mark the first time since realignment that the West champ does not go to the NCAA Tournament and five East teams go.

If NCAA bids went out today, I would put Alabama in at 18-6 but no one else from the West.

And I'd put four or five from the East in the dance.

To finish 7-9 in the league, LSU has to beat Ole Miss on Wednesday, Mississippi State at home Saturday, Auburn in Auburn on Feb. 28 and the home finale against South Carolina. I can't see LSU beating No. 1 Florida in Baton Rouge on Feb. 24 and I can't see the Tigers winning at Kentucky on Feb. 20. Again, LSU has already defeated Ole Miss and it already beat Auburn. It played well in spots in its loss at Mississippi State as well.

If the Tigers lose the next two, though, it could play South Carolina for the first-round draft choice.

Coach John Brady has pulled out NCAA Tournament bids in similar seasons. He was 3-8 in the 2002-03 season and finished 8-8, won two in the SEC Tournament and got in. He also got a decent placement in the tournament with a game in nearby Birmingham against Purdue, even though he got killed in that game.

LSU obviously will have to advance in the SEC Tournament this season to get in the NCAA Tournament. What helped LSU in 2002-03 was a win over No. 1 Arizona. What could help LSU this year is the win over Texas A&M, which was No. 6 at the time on Dec. 5 and was No. 6 last week. LSU also has a strong nonconference schedule, which will help.

In order to start winning consistently and have a chance, it would help if the Tigers played like it mattered. At times, they don't seem to have much of a sense of urgency. They need to listen to their coach, too. He is a solid coach and proven. Glen Davis, in particular, needs to listen to his coach and not argue with him on the bench as he did on Saturday.

Davis is a great player, but he doesn't know the game. He also needs to quit shooting from the top of the key.

wow. surprised gilbo is so upbeat. probably because they have no realistic chance, so this view is controversial. lsu CAN beat any team, but they wont beat enough of them.

their best shot in is to beat either uf or uk and end up 8-8 in conf. the resume (not including any sec tourney wins) would include:

    great wins against--TxAM, UF/UK
good wins against--Ark, Miss 2x, UConn, maybe AU road

    bad losses--maybe Wichita St home

    that's not so bad.

whatll piss me off is if lsu is 7-9 or 8-8 and gets a sec tourney bye, loses to UGA in Atl and doesnt get in the ncaa tourney. its almost like there should be a rule where teams that get byes in their conf tourney get ncaa bids. recall that this scenario happened to lsu a few years back---never heard a peep about anyone (media) about it.

The easiest way to get in would be a 4-2 finish, then win 2 in the conference tourny.

No way a team with 20 wins in this league gets denied.

that's harder, they have to win two more games

only one team has made it from sec with sub500 conf record (stated previously in this thread) and they evidently had tons of quality wins.

lets hope we're still having this discussion in a couple weeks.

I did not want to start a new thread but it looks like Davis helped us beat Arkansas before the game even started.

Arky players are reporting that they missed curfew the night before the LSU game and had to sit out part of the 1st half. They claim that Big Baby brought them out around BR. Thanks Glenn, bring them far away from their rooms and drop them off and tell them you better make it back soon or your Busted.:hihi:

On the status of Glen Davis who did not practice because of continued problems with right quad muscle...
“He is at the doctor as we speak. We are going to make a determination later on his status. He probably will not go with us to Kentucky; it depends on what the doctor tells me. We are going to determine the extent of his injury and the length of time he needs to get well. Before he goes back in a game, he needs to practice. Last week, we held him out of a few things when he wasn’t full speed and tried to play him in the game (against Mississippi State Saturday). If he doesn’t make this trip, we will try and get him healthy in the next three or four days. We will take off Wednesday and we will determine if he can go this weekend (against Florida at home) by the practices. If he can get himself well to practice, than he has earned the right to play.”

More Woes for the b-ball team.:dis:
