BATON ROUGE, La. - Marcus Spears spends much of his time during film sessions trying to pick out the tendencies of opposing quarterbacks. He found one last year watching Georgia's David Greene.
"We noticed that a lot of his balls weren't exactly coming from over the top," said Spears, LSU's All-SEC defensive end. "They like to run a lot of short routes so we decided we'd try to confuse him as much as we could, like to throw up our hands and see if we could knock one or two of them down."

The Tigers did a lot more than that. LSU linemen deflected 10 throws - most of them at the line of scrimmage.

"On some of the schemes we were running, we would act like we would blitz and he (Greene) would check off to other plays," linebacker Lionel Turner said. "I still think he had a great game, but we just did a little extra thinking on defense and wound up making some big plays."

Jumping linemen just begin to explain Greene's troubles. LSU also intercepted him twice during its 17-10 on Sept. 22, and three more times during the SEC Championship Game on Dec. 6.

The Tigers also sacked Greene 10 times in those two games and have recorded sacks in 29 straight games.

"They still like to throw the ball short, so I'm sure that's one of the things we're going to harp on this week and during practice," LSU defensive tackle Kyle Williams said. "We've just got to be able to get our hands up."

Coach Nick Saban said his players will get plenty of reminders, but he also warns that when it comes to defending Greene, some of the schemes that were so effective for his Tigers last year, might not work again this year.

"You don't want to do everything the same way every time," Saban said. "There were some things that worked last time, but they might not be the best this time around. This year, I'm sure we'll have to disguise some things a little bit different, and maybe some things we tried in practice the last time but didn't use in either game."

Saban said fooling Greene again won't be easy.

"He does a good job of getting the ball away quickly when he does get pressure, and they do a good job with play-action passes to maximize their protection opportunity so they're not as affected by the blitz," he said. "I think he does a good job directing that relative to what he sees the defense doing."

Spears said the key for LSU will be to not give Greene time to think. In other words, do just what they did last year when the Tigers limited Greene to just 20 completions on 44 attempts in the regular-season matchup.

"He's smart. He's not going to make a lot of mistakes. In my mind, you've got to get pressure on him, because if you don't, he's going to pick you apart," Spears said. "That's the thing about him. He's a NFL-type quarterback. You have to play smart and get in his face.

"We need to force him to move out of the pocket. We can't have him taking those five-step drops. That's the main thing with any quarterback, but with (Greene) it's especially true."

Do so, Spears added, and even veteran quarterbacks like Greene can be forced into making mistakes. For example, late in the first quarter of last September's game, the Bulldogs were driving when Spears stripped Greene, forcing a fumble that he recovered.

"You've got to try and force some mistakes," he said. "It's not easy against him, but that's what we need to try and do because if you give him a seam, he'll make a play. He can do it against anybody. He can do it against us. Our job is to keep that from happening."

just got finished checking our 2004 roster and it shows Spears and Turner are still there. Also shows Nick Saban as coach. Can anyone verify this? thanks in advance.

I do not bull**** about these things ... Greene is listed at 4.85 in the forty ...

and that's about 1/2 step behind Jason White ... who supposedly runs a 4.8 :lol:

That makes Green the New Frankenstein :hihi: ... I pity the fool and hope we don't hurt him so bad that can't beat Auburn :hihi:

Our QB runs a 4.5 and should get lots of positive yardage Saturday ... probably 40 or 50

Any one wanna bet Greene gets positive yardage Saturday ... I guarantee his numbers have a minus sign in front of them after the game ... I'll give you good odds on it ...

That's the key early in the game ... just keep busting his azz until you knock him out for good or rattle him so bad he can't drive the ball ... it's gonna happen ... and without a running game, his goose is already in the pot
