The writers have reviewed each conference and... We All Stink!! http://www.collegefootballnews.com/2005/Columnists/MZ/WeeklyAffirmation.htm "But in the SEC, it’s still not any better than in the ACC or the Pac. Notre Dame’s offense didn’t humiliate Tennessee’s defense, but the Irish still showed that a good offense will find its spots and post a solid point total against an upper-tier defense. SEC offenses truly are at the bottom of the barrel, and with just a few weeks left in the conference season, you can’t point to any one team and say that it’s gotten consistent offensive performances all year. True, Georgia and Alabama have had key injuries at vital positions, but then again, look at what teams like Oregon have done with backups this year. Look at what Southern California does with its quality depth. Look at what Miami did at running back with Charlie Jones against Virginia Tech on Saturday. Look at what Penn State has done with a lot of freshmen helping out upperclassmen. Injuries need to be put into perspective—and the Dawgs and Tide deserve some sympathy from the wider college football community—but then again, the elite programs plug in quality replacements, and in both Athens and Tuscaloosa, the loss of but two players—D.J. Shockley for UGA and Ty Prothro for Bama—has left two offenses impotent and hamstrung. Yes, defense does win championships, but it’s not as though offense is irrelevant in the larger scheme of things. Alabama—while I think they’ll beat LSU this Saturday—will not run the table just because the lack of an offense will make it too hard to go undefeated in a three-game gauntlet involving the Bayou Bengals, Auburn, and then Georgia or Florida in the SEC Championship Game (if the Tide gets that far). When you look at the SEC, you see—yep, you guessed it—more wildly inconsistent teams. One never knows what LSU team will show up... what Florida team will show up... what South Carolina team will show up... and what Vanderbilt team will show up. In fact, the only SEC teams that are consistent—outside of the ones in Athens and Tuscaloosa—are the consistently bad ones: Ole Miss, Mississippi State, Arkansas, and Kentucky. Auburn, amazingly, is a team that we still don’t know much about, but that will finally change these next two weekends. At any rate, though, the SEC just doesn’t generate that much enthusiasm, because the strength of its defenses might not be enough to overcome the weakness of its offenses in intersectional bowl-game matchups on neutral fields." I hate it when these guys make good points... and, trust me, the write-up on the Big Ten "ain't any better".
This part rankles me. He's saying that of the 3 remaining games for Bama, LSU is the easiest. Put it on the bulletin board, boys.
I think he’s the same Matthew Zemek who writes for Gator Country. http://florida.scout.com/2/422805.html
This is a down year for college football. Every conference looks bad. I'd have to say that the Pac 10 & ACC have looked the most impressive, and believe me - that's tough to say.
pac-10? why? because none of them other than USC can play defense so all of their games are shootouts? I'd rather see a 14-10 defensive battle than a pac-10 51-48 shootout..
I don't think its that he doesn't like LSU. I thinks its more that he doesn't like the SEC right now. He has spent the last month or two taking every chance he gets to dog the SEC and prove that the SEC offenses suck and that our Defenses are overrated. If he is a writer from gator country, maybe he just wants to beleive that the entire SEC is down rather than beleiving that his Gaytors just suck. The SEC has 5 teams in the top 15. I don't see how that is down.
Are you serious, or are you just saying that to back up your point. I definently don't beleive that having a great offense with no defense makes the Pac 10 teams as good as the hype, but unless i have some kind of emotion invested in a particular team that day i would much rather watch a shootout than a shutout. Say what you want about how overrated the Pac 10 is (i would probably agree with you), but they are definently interesting. That 6-3 Tenn-Alabama game almost put me in a coma.
Funny you would mention that... from "Fui" this morning: "Not only do I think USC and Texas are the top two college football teams in America, if you hooked me up to a polygraph test, I’d probably put Alabama about tenth in my personal ranking of the best teams. I’m picking LSU to beat the Tide this weekend, and I wouldn’t be shocked if Auburn won the Iron Bowl. However, Bama is still one of the three unbeaten teams in America, and it’s being treated like a third place Sun Belt squad when it comes the national title discussion".
