The Chad Jones saga could come to a quiet end Friday, simply by walking through a door.
LSU football coach Les Miles said Wednesday during his annual address to the Rotary Club at Boudreaux’s that the highly touted football/baseball recruit and Houston Astros signee would report to camp with the rest of the football team.
He also said the Jones family told the Astros that they wanted to know if the club planned to sign him before he reports for football.
Al Jones Sr., Chad’s father, said Wednesday the family would still wait until Major League Baseball’s Aug. 15 deadline. The Astros have until that date to sign Jones or lose their negotiating rights.
If he does not sign, Jones would play football and baseball for LSU.
Aside from contact with Astros scouts, Al Jones said the family has had no conversations with Astros management since Chad was drafted June 8 in the 13th round.
“We’re miles apart and there’s really been no communication,” Al Jones said. “Chad will show up at LSU and take it from there.
“I believe once he does that, that’s it. My mind and heart says he will go to LSU.”
