Conference membership isn't inclusive of all sports??

How can Notre Dame be independent in football but their softball team is part of the Big East conference? I would've thought a college (Or university :grin: ) had to be all or none. Apparently that's not so, but does anyone know the regs with that??

Nope, you can be in different conferences, or even different divisions, for individual sports. Many schools have D-I basketball programs and D-II football.
