Davey, 19 starters among veterans reporting to LSU

This is veteran's day at LSU.

The Tigers returning varsity players report to campus today, as the pace quickens toward LSU's Sept. 1 season opener with Tulane.

The Tigers return 44 letterwinners from last year's 8-4 team, 18 on offense, 24 on defense and two on special teams. Among those are seven starters on offense, 10 on defense and both kickers.

Senior quarterback and team captain Rohan Davey is not included among LSU's returning starters, though he did start two games last year. Davey played in a total of four games during the regular season, plus directing a 25-0 second-half comeback in LSU's 28-14 Peach Bowl victory over Georgia Tech.

Among other players returning is freshman quarterback Ryan Clausen. Clausen enrolled at LSU in January and participated in spring practice. As such he was not listed among the Tigers' newcomers on Monday.

LSU freshmen and junior college transfers reported on Monday. Wednesday they went through their second and last set of two-a-day practices. Both days, the Tiger newcomers were forced to work out in LSU's indoor practice facility because of thunderstorms.

LSU's full squad will practice together for the first time on Saturday at 12:20 and 7:30 p.m. The Tigers will have one practice session Sunday at 2:30 p.m. before Fan Day activities begin at 4:45.

Sunday's practice session is open to the public.
