I like the fact that Dick Bumpas and John Chevis are being considered for the DC position at LSU. Either would be great hires. But what about Frank Spaziani, DC at Boston College? I wish I would see his name mentioned more. Everywhere he has been he has done a great job, and thanks to him BC consistently has one of the best defenses in the nation. Personally my two favorites are Bumpas and Spaziani.

Good suggestion with Spaz. BC's defense produces a lot of NFL players and always performs well considering it's academic standards and relatively weak recruiting area.

spaz is my uninformed choice. just from watching his defensive players consistently improve throughout the season year in and year out.

plus hes innovative with his approach. id like to see what he'd do in the sec.

Spaz would probably be my first choice, as well. But it seems like a pipe dream, considering he's got a good thing going at a BCS school. Being in the ACC alone automatically gives you the inside track on making the BCS. So it seems unlikely that he'd make the move. It's hard to get anyone that is a truly proven commodity unless they're in a situation like Chavis this year or Tenuta last year. The young up-and-comers are typically eyeing the HC positions.

Spaziani would be a fantastic choice, but alas timing is everything and I don't think that it will come to pass for that reason.

Frank Spaziani will be entering his 11th year on the BC coaching staff, his ninth as defensive coordinator. Spaziani is one of two coaches (along with linebackers coach Bill McGovern) who remained on staff after Jeff Jagodzinski was named head coach. Spaziani's name will go down in the BC record books as the only coach with a perfect record. He was credited with BC's 25-24 win over Navy in the 2006 Meineke Car Care Bowl as he served as Interim Head Coach following the departure of Tom O'Brien. In 2006, Boston College led the ACC with five defensive touchdowns. The Eagles were third in the ACC in scoring defense and Jolonn Dunbar was named National Defensive Player of the Week when he scored two of BC's three defensive touchdowns vs. Maryland. In 2005, BC led the ACC in rushing defense (90.8 ypg.) and red zone defense (25-39, 64.1%) and were third in scoring defense (15.9 ypg.). The 2004 Eagles were ranked in the top 10 nationally in scoring defense, top 20 in rushing defense and top 25 in pass efficiency defense. In 2003 BC was ranked second in the Big East in total defense and rushing defense. During the 2002 season, the Eagle defense was ranked 13th nationally in passing defense, 25th in pass efficiency defense, 23rd in scoring defense and 37th in total defense. Spaziani joined the BC coaching staff after three seasons with the Calgary Stampeders of the Canadian Football League. During his coaching tenure at Calgary, he served two seasons as the defensive coordinator. Spaziani coached BC's running backs, including All-American Mike Cloud, during his first two seasons at BC. Prior to his coaching stint at Calgary, he served as the defensive coordinator for two years with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. Spaziani spent nine years as a member of the Virginia coaching staff, where he was defensive coordinator for his last five seasons in Charlottesville, after having been defensive backs coach for the first four. Spaziani has been a member of coaching staffs for teams that have reached 18 bowl games, including the 2006 Meineke Car Care Bowl, the 2005 MPC Computers Bowl, the 2004 Continental Tire Bowl, the 2003 Diamond Walnut San Francisco Bowl (BC), the 2002 Motor City Bowl (BC), the 2001 Music City Bowl (BC), the 2000 Aloha Bowl (BC), the 1999 Insight.com Bowl (BC), the 1990 Sugar Bowl (Virginia), the 1989 Citrus Bowl (Virginia), the 1987 All-American Bowl (Virginia), the 1984 Peach Bowl (Virginia), the 1981 Liberty Bowl (Navy) and the 1980 Garden State Bowl and 1978 Holiday Bowl (Navy). Spaziani is a 1969 graduate of Penn State, where he was a star defensive end on the Nittany Lions teams that tied Florida State in the 1967 Gator Bowl and defeated Kansas in the 1969 Orange Bowl. He began his coaching career in 1969 as a graduate assistant to Joe Paterno at Penn State. After three years as an assistant high school coach, he became head coach at Hempstead (N.Y.) High School in 1973, and, a year later, at Raritan (N.J.) High. He joined head coach George Welsh as an offensive assistant at the U.S. Naval Academy in 1975 and went with Welsh from Annapolis to Virginia in 1982. Frank and his wife, the former Laura Heikel, are the parents of three children, Joseph and twins Avery and Andrew.

Earlier in his career, Spaziani was dubbed the mad scientist by ESPN analyst Chris Spielman because he was always "cooking up plays."

"He stresses enthusiasm," said cornerback DeLeon Gause. "He tells us to go out there and have fun. But he adjusts so well during the game, getting feedback from us.

"He knows exactly what position to put us in."

Spaziani has several options for each game. "You have to have your fastball, your curve or changeup, and something else ready if you are getting creamed," said Spaziani. That has not happened very much during his tenure at BC. "[Former Virginia and Navy coach] George Welsh called it a 'change of the game' defense. Hopefully, you have the right one."

The Eagles have had to adjust to injuries and other factors the past two years, which has made Spaziani use all the pitches in his repertoire. A year ago, he lost linebacker Brian Toal (shoulder injury) and B.J. Raji (academic issues) for the season and had to adjust as starters Nick Larkin, DeJuan Tribble, and Jo-Lonn Dunbar missed playing time. This season, Gause (ankle), defensive lineman Alex Albright (neck), and Toal (broken fibula) have been injured, with Albright and Toal done for the season. The latest injury was suffered by safety Wes Davis (ankle), who will not start against North Carolina.

"Spaz never asks anyone to do what they aren't capable of doing," said Gallup. "And players play here, sometimes right away. It helps when we do run into injuries."
