Davis gives all; that's all Texans ask

Domanick Davis was going so badly at one point a few weeks ago that the Texans went back and watched video of his rookie season.

They wanted to reassure themselves that they hadn't imagined the whole thing. They couldn't believe the guy who was having such a hard time in 2004 was the same guy who'd looked so good in 2003.

Around that time, they began to doubt he was their long-term answer at running back.

They feel different now after watching him persevere, work through a variety of injuries and inconsistent offensive line play and finally make himself productive again.

What they think of him also says a lot about the kind of player they want.

Whatever you think of the way general manager Charley Casserly and head coach Dom Capers have constructed the franchise, it speaks volumes that they place work ethic and being a good teammate near the top of their priority list.

A model professional
They want more players like Domanick Davis.

He's conscientious and professional, one of those guys who sets an example for every other player in how he approaches his job. Those guys might not carry teams to championships, but teams don't win championships without a few of them.

"Growing up, my family didn't have a lot of things," he said. "I was brought up believing no one is going to give you anything but that if you work hard, you'll get where you want to go."

His ultimate role with the Texans might be less than it is now.

Their offseason wish list could include a larger, more punishing running back, but unless they find another Fred Taylor or Shaun Alexander, Davis will be in the mix.

"The ideal thing would be to have Domanick and a big pounder," Capers said.

He likes the way the Pittsburgh Steelers alternate Duce Staley and Jerome Bettis. He likes how they complement each another and wear down defenses.
