Maybe the performances of Lundy and Taylor will get Davis back on the field faster. He says the outside of his knee is sore. The doctors have told him that his knee will always be sore, but he's got to learn to play with the pain. We'll see how he responds. Truthfully, a back needs to get his legs in preseason, but there's no need to give a veteran like Davis a lot of work. He's trying to learn a new system, but running backs are usually instinctive, and they figure it out on their own. If Davis has mended enough - mentally as well as physically - to answer the bell in the opener against Philadelphia, the Texans should be happy. Of course, it remains to be seen how many carries he can handle and if he can put two games in a row.

"They wanted to hear from me exactly how I felt," Davis said after practice Monday. "I'm glad we had the meeting. I feel good about it. Sometimes in a situation like this, you can get down. Sometimes it gets stressful. They let me know they're behind me."

There's no timetable for Davis to return to practice, much less play in a game. He missed the last five games of the 2005 season and underwent surgery to remove part of the lateral meniscus in his left knee.

A real good long piece on DD, with Kubiak and Texans GM Rick Smith. It all sounds indeterminant, unfortunately. DD seems to be a crowd and team favorite, everyone likes him here.

Why practice? Him and TO get paid sitting around and riding bikes. I think pro football is the pussification of good athletes. Once you sign the big contract there is really no incentive to play other than determination. If I'm a millionaire why would I get out in the hot sun and sweat my balls off when I can say "my hamstring/knee hurts" and take off for the entire preseason only to come back in the regular season and play with no penalties? Pussification...

i wish he would get well, so i can decide on where to pick him in FFB. he may slide down and be a very good #2 RB, if he can stay healthy he'll put up some good numbers.

This all just serves to highlight the stupidity of the Texans management for passing on Bush.

as much as i like DD, they did screw up with the Bush deal. If you look at their pathetic off. line, he has put up some solid numbers, by far the best on the team.
If the guy could stay healthy with Kubiak using the old Denver blocking schemes, a 1600 yd rushing/400 yd rec. season would be attainable.

However we will stay hurt on a regular basis it seems, poor Mario. He'll be wishing he was picked #2 or just anywhere behind Bush.

Nothing in the preseason can determine whether it was a good or bad move. Such evaluations take time, unless one only cares about ESPN highlights.

Hopefully DD can make it back ASAP, but the sky won't fall if he doesn't.

Now it's looking like DD could be cut before the season starts. Wow...it's a tough business, and I'm sure somebody would pick him up.

Each day, Kubiak grows more concerned about Davis' lack of availability during a week in which the roster will be reduced to a final 53 on Friday, one day after the Texans close preseason at home against Tampa Bay.

"I'm very concerned," Kubiak said. "There's not much we can do about it, but I'm very concerned about that situation. It'll be a tough decision for the final 53. We'll make the decision based on what's best for Domanick and the team."

The Texans will have several options. They can make Davis part of the final roster and wait for him to get healthy. They can place him on waivers. They can put him on injured reserve, which means he wouldn't play this season. They also could trade him, which is unlikely because he's damaged goods.

Davis can't be placed on the physically unable to perform list because he passed the team's physical before training camp.

Asked what has to happen for Davis to be on the 53-man roster, Kubiak said, "We have to see something that shows he's making a lot of progress.

"Before the game Thursday, we'll probably have a sit-down with Domanick, the doctors, possibly his agent and everybody involved in the process to see where he is. That's going to be a big call.

"The farther we go without him being on the field, the tougher that decision becomes. And when I say tough, it doesn't necessarily mean that Domanick won't be on the 53-man roster. If he's definitely making progress, and everybody thinks he's going to be able to play, then he will be (on the final roster)."

Davis, who turns 26 in October, was on his way to a third consecutive 1,000-yard season a year ago but came up 24 yards short because of the knee injury. The surgery removed part of his lateral meniscus.

Davis didn't participate in the offseason program while rehabilitating his knee. When camp began, he was on the practice field for two days before suffering the bruised knee that has kept him on the sideline.

"I see a guy that's done everything the doctors have asked him to do," Kubiak said. "He was feeling great on the first day of training camp. He was excited about the season. I watched him work for two days and watched the knee respond.

"I know it's been very frustrating for him. Last week, we set a schedule for him to follow, and I'm very encouraged by what he did. He ran well. It'll be interesting to see how he comes back."

Kubiak has emphasized since early in training camp that Davis has to prove he can practice before he can play. He won't play against the Buccaneers.

Ironic that you're calling out the NFL on being pussies, when a LSU Tiger is about to face the stone cold reality of the NFL. To quote Glanville, "NFL means Not For Long". If the NFL was so soft, our tough Tigers S. Peterman, Clayton, Lavalais, Devery, etc.. wouldn't be having such a hard time. I'm no NFL homer by any means & live college football, but anybody can see it's a "no kidding" league.
