Who the hell goes to Italy, and has no idea what to do once they get there? Buy some beer and start a fight. That's what we always did. It doesn't matter what city you're in. Have fun.

I've been to Italy several times for both business and pleasure. I think it's a great country and my favorite of those for which English is not the primary language. There is a lot to see, the people are warm and accommodating and the food is incredible.

Towards the south, there is a mix of natural beauty (the Amalfi coast, etc.) and incredible man-made sights from Roman times. A good trip is to spend time in Rome, then travel to Naples and further south by local train and stay in one of the smaller towns on the coast (Positano, or other). From there you can visit Pompeii and just relax. Rome has more history, museums, etc. than any place in the world in my opinion.

Venice is an okay place to visit but I wouldn't put it at the top of the list. I have not been to Florence but it has lots to offer. Northern Italy is highlighted by the Alps - spectacular.

The internet is your friend - do some research before going over.

We just got back from a 4 day stay in Rome. You could spend a month there and not see all of it. The Vatican City was unbeliveable and the Coliseium and the other Roman ruins were incredible. The weather was great [10 degrees farenhit warmer and sunny compared to Basel Switzerland] and the food simple but prepared great. Not the same as chicken and sausage gumbo on Thanksgiving morning but a great place to visit. Tuscany region is also nice down to the Mediterranean and the leaning tower of Pisa was a trip. Enjoy!
