Since the bowls seem to be here to stay how about this idea. Seed the top 8 teams and have quarterfinals and simifinals at the higher seeds home field on the 2nd & 3rd Saturday in December. Then carry on with the 4 former BCS bowls picking from the 6 non-finalists with one of the bowls selected to host the national championship game.
perhaps you didn't see the below link as part of the thread. Keeping the bowls as part of a playoff was discussed...and in my original plan, all the sites listed were bowl sites.:thumb: http://www.sportsfansofamerica.com/FansInAction/Football/playoffs1.htm
I still like the below .. it incorporates other & bcs bowls .... :thumb: .. #1- Have 11 conference playoff (acc, big east, big 10, big 12, c-usa, mac, mid-west, pac 10, sec, sun belt and wac)... This would give us 11 of the 16 teams... These games would be played at the individual conference sites #2- Select 5 at large teams ... based on POWER ratings ... These would be seeded LOWER .. and could come from a LOOSER in the conf. championship .. or even from a non-conf championship player (like  this year...) #3- Select the OLDER low level bowls (like Sun Holiday, Outback, Liberty, Music City, Peach Sun, Independence) to host the FIRST ROUND .. where 1st. seed plays 16th. seed, etc... for 8 games at the 8 selected sites... #4- Round 2 would have 4 games ... use Cotton, Capitol one, Gator (bigger bowl games) PLUS ONE BCS bowl (example Fiesta would be in round 2 this year .. but host the NC game next year ... like current rotation) #5- Round 3 would have 2 games ... use 2 of 3 remaining BCS bowls (Sugar and Orange in rotation with Rose and Fiesta like today..) #6- Round 4 would have the NC game at the Rose .. which would be in rotation .. it would fall to Round 2 next year.. etc... Force NDame (and I like them except when they play an SEC team) .. to join the Big 10 or they are OUT... Force ALL conf's to have a Championship Game (for equity purposes ... and $$$$'s) ,,,
The more I think about this... The more I think.. SCREW THE BOWLS for a playoff system. Yeah yeah yeah.. blah blah blah... No other way to do it otherwise.. blah blah blah.. money money money.. blah blah blah.... So what, drastic change is needed. It's all hypothetical anyways... If you use bowls for the entire playoffs, it WILL NOT WORK because as someone (thorny) posted on this forum... Fans would have to travel a LOT if their team progresses through the playoffs. Talk about a sysrtem that caters to only those rich fans with absolutely nothing to do otherwise. The average paying fan can't follow their team around the country, much less state to state, for an entire month. You know why the playofss work in D-2 and D-3? It is because the games are played on the home field of the higher seed. The fans do not have to travel from week to week - unless of course they are a low seed that has gotten lucky. Screw the bowls. Screw big corporations ruling an amateur sport. :cuss:
I think we are years away (if ever) from a real playoff system, but at least there is a growing sentiment in the media, and many coaches, for a plus one system. I'd settle for a plus one system at this point...
