    Don't you think that before a feller runs for President, he ought to have to have proved that he is suitable and has the temperament for public office? Governor or Senator at least. Perhaps a Cabinet position?

    Like George Washington? Ulysses S. Grant? Dwight D. Eisenhower? Did Andrew Jackson hold any other elected office before running for president?

    Let me point out that these were all very high-ranking generals (the highest) with loads of experience in the national political arena. And also none of them were particularly good Presidents with the possible exception of Washington, who did as little as possible because that is what he thought a President should do.

    State legislature and US Senator as well as a General.

    Your knowledge of Washington's presidency is underwhelming. He set standards that are still being followed. He changed his emphasis from a traditional Va gentleman planter to much more friendly to northern business. He established the methods of running the government that are still valid today. He along with Lincoln are the 2 greatest presidents followed by FDR.
    DDE is getting more and more respect for his terms as president. He was much more subtle in his presidency and is getting more credit for changing the US post war than he was originally. Read Stephen Ambrose's biography.

    Don't believe that for a second. It will take a miracle to keep her out of the White House. The chances are better that Anthony Jennings wins the Heisman than the Republican party pulls their head out of their ass any time soon. Once they eliminate anyone close to having a new idea, they will nominate some dried up old prune that parrots the party line and Bill will be partying like it's 1999 shortly there after.

    Guys, We can't talk about Andrew Jackson as a political figure anymore. We can't talk about Thomas Jefferson anymore either. The Democrats are deleting them from history of their party.

    That sounds like Hillary, the GOP has a great shot here if they can keep from stepping on their own dicks. Pick a younger, charismatic personality, young being the key, and they can win. Unfortunately I have little faith that they can do this, they are too busy tearing themselves apart from the inside out instead of devising a decent yet simple strategy to take the WH. The Donald isn't helping matters either.

    Whats going to happen is they will eventually go too far with each other and end up alienating themselves by saying something to or about the eventual candidate that they won't be able to take back once he gets the nomination. Bunch of idiots.

    Well, I've read more than one book about Washington, Hoss. I didn't say he did nothing! I said that his philosophy was that the Presidency should do very little. Washington was very sensitive that the Presidency did not seem king-like in any fashion after centuries of royal rule. it is difficult to compare his accomplishments with later Presidents because he worked with a budget that was so small, a Congress still getting used to its job, and a system of government still in its infancy.
