The university claims 12. By doing research, you can find about 17 or 18, many of which are BS. There are only 2 or 3 that are unanimous. One, from 1941, which the school claims, was when Bama was 8-2 and didn't even win the SEC Championship. They were 20th in the AP poll but finsihed Number One after the bowls in some BS poll.
According to the official Alabama archives they have 193 national championships. Including one in 1863 that they claim because some guy that took a crap at Bama 20 years later shot a Union General off his horse while he was taking a drink from his flask.
Okey Dokey..... if you REALLY want to know.... http://www.ncaa.org/library/records/football_records_book/2005/2005_d1_football_records.pdf The first "SEC" team to ever win a national championship was Auburn in 1913. Since the Associated Press started in 1936, Alabama has been awarded 6: '61, '64, '65, '78, '79, '92 If you take ALL recognized polls (and there used to be many), you can find AT LEAST one poll picking Alabama in 1925, 26, 30, 34, 35, 41, 45, 61, 64, 65, 66, 75, 77, 78, 79, 92. So 16 for those who include polls written on the back of grandma's gravy recipe. Now using that same math, Iowa won three... 56, 58 and 60. ... but the difference between us and them is we don't claim any.
